Navajo Interior Project: 1976 AMC Pacer D/L

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1976 AMC Pacer D/L has the famous and eye-popping Navajo Interior design and it’s almost worth the price of admission alone if it’s in good condition. The photos are small but check out the listing here on eBay in Sun Valley, California, and there is an unmet opening bid price of $3,000 to get things rolling, which nobody has clicked on yet. A side note: the seller lists this car as a 1975 Pacer, but the VIN decodes it as being a 1976 car.

Sadly, this car is in somewhat rough condition, despite its apparent solid body. That’s always a good thing, but the hot sun can wreak havoc on anything soft: fabrics, rubber and plastic parts, gaskets, hoses, belts, paint, etc. Still, this would be a fun project car for someone who has been looking for a Pacer sedan with the famous Navajo fabric interior.

The seller says that this is, in fact, a project car as it isn’t running. We don’t see the engine at all, sadly, and maybe there isn’t one, who knows, they don’t mention it at all other than this isn’t a running or driving car. The famous view is that rear-3/4 shot, though, the famous fishbowl Pacer. The Station wagon versions didn’t have that curved glass, so if you’ve been looking for a project Pacer, this may be it.

The steering wheel, as you can see, needs some help, but strangely enough, the interior looks pretty good otherwise, other than a cracked driver’s door panel. And, maybe some missing bits here and there. This would be a good test of a dry-ice-blasting company, it looks like it would clean up nicely, and those seats are to die for. The Navajo seating pattern is about as good as it gets for the Pacer line, in my opinion. February of 1975 is when the Pacer was introduced, and to have created such a buzz during its short lifespan of just five years is pretty cool. By the end of 1979, the dream was over.

As I mentioned, the seller doesn’t show the engine or really even talk about it at all. All they say is that it doesn’t run, and according to the VIN, this car would have had an AMC 258-cu.in. OHV inline-six, which would have had 110 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It’s backed up by a column-shifted Chrysler-sourced TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. We don’t have a clue what’s going on with the drivetrain at all, so this is a gamble. Is this one worth the gamble?

I’ve owned two of these, I think they’re great cars and get a lot of attention. However, the plastics inside don’t do well in the sun, and they see plenty of sun. The door panels are nearly impossible to find, as well as the taillights. The rest of it looks pretty good, though.

I prefer the Levi’s Edition interior. It looks better when it fades. 😂

Buy the OHC 6 firebird listed earlier, hang that motor in the Pacer. Watch folks at Cars & Coffee stroke out trying to figure out what it is….

The Fire Chief of Whitfield,FL had one of these as his Chiefs car. I còuldn’t find my picture of it. It had a big Federal Q siren on the right fender. I told him if he ever used it it would flip the car on it’s side. Thanks for the memories.
    The was also yellow!
