Needs Finishing: 1932 Ford Coupe Hot Rod

While production cars are often referred to as “cookie-cutter” vehicles that share standard mechanical components, paint, and trim, the same can’t be said for traditional Hot Rods. They allow enormous scope for personalization, meaning that you will almost certainly never find two identical cars. This 1932 Ford 3-Window Coupe is a perfect example of the breed. It features an array of mechanical upgrades, but the new owner could complete this build to reflect their unique taste. The seller has listed the Ford here on eBay in Assonet, Massachusetts. Bidding has raced to $11,066, which is above the reserve.

The seller is slightly sparing with their information about this Ford, although they indicate that it has been their project for many years. They commenced the build with a body sourced in Texas. It is rust-free and is made from 100% genuine Ford steel. A previous owner modified the rear quarters to accommodate larger tires, but reversing that change would be pretty straightforward if the buyer wished to follow a more conservative path. The panels feature a few minor and repairable bumps, and the new owner can choose whether to add front and rear fenders or leave the wheels exposed as is seen on many of these classics. It appears that a couple of pieces of glass might be cracked, and the addition of bright trim would depend on the buyer’s vision for this Hot Rod.

The seller supplies no close-up engine photos, but it appears that they have completed most of the mechanical hard work. They selected a 255ci flathead V8 from a 1953 Mercury to power this classic. It received an upgraded Isky camshaft, new cylinder heads, and dual carburetors. It would have generated approximately 125hp when new, but I expect that the figure has climbed substantially. They bolted a three-speed manual 1937 LaSalle transmission to the flathead, which feeds the power to a 1940 Ford rear end. The front axle is a 1932 Ford heavy-duty unit with a 4″ drop to give the car a nice rake. It appears that the Coupe doesn’t run or drive, although the seller states their belief that it would only take a few weekends of tinkering in a garage to achieve that goal.

The Ford’s interior provides further scope for personalization. It features a cloth-upholstered bench seat that looks presentable, while the aluminum dash houses a brace of Stewart Warner gauges within a machine-turned fascia. There are no door trims, headliner, or carpet. The new owner could utilize the existing seat and its cloth cover as a starting point, or they could start from scratch to create the interior of their dreams. Imagination and budget will be the only limiting factors if the buyer craves a genuinely unique look.

This 1932 Ford Coupe is a promising project candidate, and the interest generated by the seller’s listing confirms that enthusiasts recognize its potential. With the drivetrain sorted, there is a chance for someone to create something unique and eye-catching by selecting their preferred paint and trim. I’m sure that most Barn Finds readers will have a vision for this classic in their heads, but do we have any that might transform that dream into reality?

11 hours left and up to 25,400. I guess there are some seeing value.
Personally way out of my range, but the kind of hot rod I’ve drooled over since I was a kid. Granted back then everyone was cramming gm 8’s in them, much to my dismay. Would love to be in a position to take this on, especially with the merc flathead & lasalle tranny already in place.
I’d keep it clean and simple for daily enjoyment.
