New England Survivor: 1976 Pontiac Grand LeMans

The LeMans was Pontiac’s mid-size offering from 1964 to 1981. It originated as a compact in 1961 and gave birth to the GTO in 1964, the leader of the muscle car pack. The 1973-77 models were from the Colonnade era of design and styling at General Motors, where true hardtops were no more. This 1976 edition is a Grand LeMans, the luxury model, and looks like it just left the showroom floor. Located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, this beauty no doubt has a history, but the seller isn’t sharing. Yet it’s available here on OfferUp for $15,995. Our thanks go to “Zen” for this tip.

Pontiac switched nameplates on its premium LeMans in 1975. The Luxury LeMans became the Grand LeMans, which seemed like a better choice. The most noticeable changes in 1976 were the switch from round to rectangular headlights and the Grand LeMans used a cockpit-style instrument panel of the Grand Am, which had been discontinued. A Chevy inline-6 was standard for fuel economy reasons, but many of these cars still came with a Pontiac 350 cubic inch V8, like in the seller’s car (no photo). The Grand LeMans was sold in three configurations: 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and a station wagon.

We’re starting to see a lot of beautiful cars like this offered for sale with practically no details. Besides it having 82,000 miles, a new battery, and a fresh tune-up, we only have a handful of photos to develop an opinion. The car originated in Florida and seemingly had every option in the book, including bucket seats, air conditioning, and power windows. The seller does say it drives well, but closes with “sport and luxury at its best”.

This coupe is one of 14,757 to leave the assembly line in 1976. The body, paint, and interior all look spotless. But the light green half vinyl roof covering seems like an awkward color compared to the rest of the car. Was that a factory choice, or was it replaced later? We don’t know, but the old school two-car garage with all the signage is pretty darn cool!

The Grand Lemans was for those who thought the Grand Prix was too much, especially in the price department. Honestly I don’t know why car manufacturers made these mid sized cars in coupes with the personal luxury coupes being the thing in vogue.

Another two door car with that ridiculous combination. Bucket seats and auto the column.

Interesting to see buckets and no console. Its a nice clean example but is it me or is the rear bumper.drooping a bit. This should find a nice home soon

Maybe I’m becoming color blind, but I see no green to that vinyl roof. And, yeah, that rear bumper seems to be bent downward. An accident maybe?
