No Reserve: 1969 AMC AMX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1969 AMC AMX ticks so many of the “right” boxes that it is hard to know where to start. It has been part of the same family since Day One, meaning it has a known ownership history. It is rock-solid, featuring its original 390ci V8 under the hood. Oh, and the seller has listed it with No Reserve. Combine those factors, and it is easy to understand why the AMX has generated considerable interest since the seller listed it here on eBay in Clermont, Florida. Bidding sits at $15,200 as potential buyers clamor for their slice of the action.

I have always found it sad that the AMX only enjoyed a three-year production life. AMC developed a car that featured bold and aggressive styling, and while its two-seat configuration meant that it wasn’t as practical as a Mustang or Camaro, it was possible to order these vehicles with a potent V8 under the hood that provided excellent performance. This 1969 example is a one-family-owned classic that the seller confirms has received a repaint in its original Cordoba Brown. They don’t specify when this occurred, but the fact that the AMX has spent over fifteen years in storage may be a guide to the timeframe involved. It still looks quite presentable, with the paint shining and only a few minor chips. What this car lacks is the rust that is often an issue, with the listing text and photos seemingly confirming that this AMC is rock-solid. The chrome looks good for its age, and the glass is clear.

The first owner meant business when ordering this AMX, ticking the boxes beside the 390ci V8 and four-speed manual transmission on their Order Form. The company’s 1969 Model Range Brochure confirms power and torque figures of 315hp and 425 ft/lbs, and with these cars tipping the scales at a touch over 3,200 lbs, this is a genuinely fast package. After fifteen years of hibernation, the AMX has been coaxed back to life by the seller. The images suggest that the process included bolting on a new carburetor, although this doesn’t rate a mention. However, an embedded video in the listing confirms that the engine sounds sweet, with the seller stating that the vehicle runs and drives well. They suggest treating the AMX to a thorough inspection and new tires before attempting any extended journeys.

One area of this AMX needing love is its interior. It is serviceable in its current form, but there is some significant deterioration in some areas. A complete retrim would seem the most appropriate course of action because the wheel and pad are cracked, the carpet is tired, and the seatcovers are beginning to fail. On the plus side, there are no major changes or modifications, making achieving a factory-fresh state with a trim kit a realistic goal.

The 1969 model year marked the high point in AMX production, with AMC finding buyers for 8,293 of these classics. The 390/4-speed combination, as found in this car, proved easily the most popular, accounting for 3,690 vehicles. It is easy to understand why. It offered buyers exceptional performance at a very competitive price. The listing for this one-family-owned classic has attracted over 550 views in the past day, and an impressive 132 people have added it to their Watch List. That demonstrates that people like what they see and are eager to give this AMX a new home. Do you share that view?

Love these 2 seat AMX models…. And a 390??? Icing on the cake. One family ownership too is very rare and very desirable too. Very quick car here.

“It’s a great car, dad, I just made it better”. Someone else can post that recently found video if they want, when I do that, my comment goes to Hades.
I speak of 1969 as being a pivotal year in cars. Every car maker jumped on the performance bandwagon, this was our contribution. It would do ( again with the “Catalog”) 0-60 in 5.7 sec. and the 1/4 mile in just over 14sec@ almost 100mph. That, my friends, was one slick Rambler. The 315hp was highly UNDER rated, like all back then, and was probably more like 375. Engine mods and suspension, ( and getting rid of useless weight at the dragstrip, like the deep pile carpet and plush bucket seats, ELEANOR, come see how your son butchered his new car) 13s easy. It spelled trouble for those 390 Mustangs and 396 Chevelles, but in true AMC form, while completely comparable to all others, we just couldn’t shake that Rambler image, and just didn’t have the zing. We however, were very proud of this car, the kid was right, it was a great car.

In the commercial, the kid says, “Butchered? It’s a great car Dad, I only made it better.” Actually, it was a Javelin, not an AMX. Still a great spot. And as a side note, one of my friends in college somehow got that car. His dad had an AMC dealership, so I guess he knew the right people.

Neat little machine! I’ve always liked the AMX — the Javelin, a little less — for its style and performance. AMC seems to always have been willing to go a step beyond, style-wise, and this chunky little ride is one of my favorites from their design studio.

It certainly deserves an interior re-do and, if I had any money left over from purchase and re-trim cost, I’d get a set of proper natural-finish Torq Thrusts for it. Not a fan of those wheels.

At the current price, it’s a good deal. I’m pretty sure the bidding will go on, though.

Really like this car in Brown. It shouldn’t work but it does. I wonder how easy it would be to hit the emergency brake pedal instead of the clutch when speed shifting though?

Yes, lots of rusty brown on the bottom too.

This is a cool car. I’d want to see if the flipper who’s selling it has the old carb and distributor and put them back on. Modified cars like this were what filled the parking lot of drive in restaurants and local cruises. This looks clean enough that there is no reason to restore it. Just make it safe, replace the newer components with vintage speed equipment, then enjoy.

According to the tachometer, redline is beyond 8000 RPM – you’re only in the yellow zone between 5 and 8! Or is my computer screen rendering red as yellow in that image?

This is a pretty clean AMX and the price is decent. Just needs some interior work and some cleaning up under the hood. Make the spark plug wires neat and make the wire harness a little cleaner. It is nice that it is a manual!

Stan is right. I owned a 68 and 70 back in the late 80s. Front bumper is bent upward, typical damage from a front end collision and hard to straighten. Front hood and left fender trim also missing. No pictures of the first spots these rust out (trays under the fenders and inner rocker panels). Does it make it worthless? No. But the perceived repairs make this about a 12k car to me. If it was a 70, it could command a higher price. Imho

The Roger Penske team with Mark Donohue at the wheel proved that they could do bendy roads, too! Saw Mark at work many times at Lime Rock. A true gentleman who died far too early.

If the car is a one owner family car, why did it need to be discovered? Could be a flood damaged car??

Just by looking at the engine pic tells me that the heater core was bypassed. Wonder what else was butchered? Looks nice though, has good bones but needs some work.

I would never presume to call myself anything more than a shade tree mechanic but to my ears this car has some pretty loud lifter noise going on. Or maybe I’m all wet. As I have said before, the 390 AMX was the only car that shut down (not by much) my 390 Mustang. Anyway, GLWTS.

There are a whole bunch of questions about this car. Underside shows some metal munching termites have been feasting, as well as what looks like a crack at the rear of the drivers side floor pan. The steering wheel shows signs of having sustained a hard impact. The steering column is rusty (how does a steering column get rusty?) as well as the clock surround. Does the placement of the front wheels inside the wheel well look right? It looks like the wheel is pushed back on the drivers side. Wheels are definitely wrong. S/B Cragar SS or Torque Thrust if not OE. I’d love to have an AMX but not this one.

The disconnected heater core and the messed up underhood wiring are major red flags.

I owned two of these back in the late 80s and know them well. Front bumper has definitely been hit and a bad straightening job. Plus, the front hood and driver side fender trim is missing. The engine does have a knock, could even be a ride knock. Also no pictures of the first place these rust through, the trays under the vendors and inner rocker panels.

Rusty bottom, brake booster, looks like an aluminum fuel line run to the electric pump, lots of iffy things here. I’ve always loved the style of these cars, and test drove a few 50 yrs ago but never ran across a nice one. Lots of rough ones even back then.

‘Red’ line is faded. AMC 390 were torque motors not high revving engines. You would be shifting at or below 5000. With 3.90:1 rear end gears you would rev quick and get through the gears. Torque and HP peaked, early, all done by 5000 rpm.

Valve timing has a lot to do with power band. AMC V8s have very conservative cam profiles. 401 V8 has a little more duration and lift than a 69 390, but not by much.

In the same family doesn`t mean much for this AMX. Not well cared for. Interior is beat for one thing. A lot wrong and incorrect things. I wouldn`t trust the mechanicals either. Buyer will have surprises.

Not original. AMC Rally Pac had a S/W oil gauge, but that gauge is not correct.
