Bidding has started to heat up for this clean 1987 Toyota 4Runner, which wears a somewhat rare paint scheme and seemingly presents well in photos. The seller does admit that it looks better online than it does up close, but at the end of the day, it’s a desirable 4×4 that isn’t rusty and benefits from a variety of cosmetic and mechanical improvements. The seller lists the mileage as 100,000, but I suspect it’s higher; regardless, it seems like you have to treat this one as true mileage unknown. The 4Runner is equipped with an automatic transmission, which could be perceived as a sign that it hasn’t been beaten on. Find it here on eBay where bidding has reached $7,300 with no reserve.
I feel like almost every vehicle of a certain age presents better in photos than it does in person, so I wouldn’t hold it against the seller for disclosing this. In fact, it could be more a matter of the lighter-colored fabrics show some flaws up close that the seller is worried don’t appear in photos. The dashboard looks quite nice along the front edges but the protective mat could be hiding cracks; however, the truck’s Arkansas location makes it a real possibility that it isn’t cracked given the sun isn’t as brutal as in West Coast or desert environments. The must-have auxiliary gague cluster is still attached to the dash, which is a good sign given how many of these get pilfered or lost over the years.
The engine bay is at least very nicely detailed if nothing else, as the seller doesn’t mention any new maintenance parts having been thrown at it. He claims to be using it for commuting purposes, which is a fairly strong endorsement of its running condition if true. Even so, the standard 4Runner engine is known for its durability, with the 2.4L 22R four-cylinder going for years in sorely neglected condition and barely complaining about it. A maintained one will easily outlast the vehicle body around it, as numerous pickup trucks that live in the Northeast have shown. Throw a timing belt and tensioner on it and change the fluids – that’s about the least you can do it and it will still run happily for years.
I love the copper paint job which I believe was a factory option and is a nice change of pace from the usual silvers, blacks, and whites. The seller’s truck comes with the original hardtop and back seat, and supposedly comes with a custom sound system. The grill and lenses look to be in good shape, and the seller has added what looks like custom bumpers front and rear. The tires are definitely upgraded as well, and overall, this is an attractive package for a rapidly appreciating truck that you still use for errand running without feeling too guilty. The market for 4Runners has been hot for a while, and I doubt it will cool off any time soon.
Having owned several Toyota pickups including a 87 4×4 sr5 pickup I’m leary of the mileage. The engine compartment has been cleaned and I see some things that tell me the mileage maybe higher. The valve cover has seen some miles for sure. Hard to find low mileage trucks of this year or earlier not have over 200k. Only sure way to tell if the mileage has been changed is the the number won’t line up straight on the speedometer. Knew a guy who made side money rolling back mileage on vehicles. The numbers never lined up straight.
Not to nit pick but, this is the 22RE engine, fuel injected. Also all 22R engines are a timing chain engine, not timing belt. Looks pretty nice for it’s age though.
It aint no Cuda, but it does have a pistol-grip.
The automatic transmission is a huge hit in desirability and value within the 1st Gen 4Runner market.
