Not Grandma’s Car: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle 300

When most people think of the Chevy Chevelle, they think of either the Malibu or the Super Sport. But there were also two bare-bones models, the 300 and 300 Deluxe (at least in 1967). The seller has the former with a six-cylinder engine to get it to and from the store. It looks to have a few mods, principally an SS-style hood. Though it appears good, there is some rust afoot; otherwise, it seems to be a driver. Located in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, this entry-level Chevelle is available here on craigslist for $9,000. The Chevelle was in its fourth year in 1967 and had some styling updates to set it apart from the 1966 models (mostly the taillights and grille). If you needed a new mid-size car and your budget was limited, the 300 or 300 Deluxe was the way to go at your neighborhood Chevy dealer. Not nearly as popular as the Malibu, Chevy sold about 51,000 300/300 Deluxe copies in 1967 vs. 228,000 Malibus. These numbers exclude wagons, pickups (El Camino), and Super Sports, in all body styles.

If a Plain Jane 300, this 4-door sedan with a 230 cubic inch inline-6 saw about 10,000 deliveries that year. This one has been well-used, with the odometer sitting at 67,000 miles on its second time around. Options may have been few, but someone checked the box for a 2-speed Powerglide transmission back in the day, along with power steering. The interior looks okay, but the carpeting (a different color and fading) could have been added later, as rubber floor coverings were the order of business on a 300. There’s a pair of huge speakers sitting on the back seat.

We’re told the car runs well and burns zero oil. The custom two-tone paint is surely a redo given the hood swap. There is some rust to deal with in the rear quarter panels and trunk. To help it go faster (right), Super Sport Rally wheels were added along with Goodyear Radial T/A tires. All in all, this looks like a decent driver that you could take to Cars & Coffee until you wanted to fix its ills. But the lack of a V8 and two extra doors suggests you don’t go overboard.
