Offered at No Reserve: The Generous Collection

The so-called “Generous Auction” is one of the more intriguing offerings we’ve seen from the collection world in a while. The collection is massive, and was born out of a curious twist of generosity. The seller, a man named Greg Rusk, earned a reputation for being a collector. Eventually, people would approach him with what they had for sale, and if it was up for grabs due to a medical emergency or wanting to buy a home (fill in the blank here for the myriad good reasons people decide to sell a car), he’d pay whatever the seller required to meet that goal. It led to him acquiring interesting cars like this 1977 Pontiac Phoenix coupe, listed here on Hagerty.com along with numerous others.

You can see the full collection here, with auctions ending over the next several days. The vehicles are all generally tidy, and while not perfect, there are some low-mileage survivors in the group. Apparently, Rusk set out to build a collection of Cadillacs, and in doing so, his reputation in the small town got around. In that time, he racked up around 1,300 vehicles, all of which represented seemingly every color of the rainbow as it related to makes and models. Cars like this 19,000 Mile 1986 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 listed here are proving popular, with bids to $12,500 and a mere 19,918 miles on the clock.

When you look at the variety of the vehicles for sale, it’s clear that Rusk placed an emphasis on appealing to the gearhead that resides inside all of us instead of just buying the shiniest car at the dealership. Some of these vehicles look like they were in the process of an earnest attempt at restoration before life got in the way, such as this modified 1967 Porsche 911 coupe, which has been updated with an aftermarket widebody kit. These days, you wouldn’t think to modify a long-hood, air-cooled 911, but this one was likely snatched up at a time when they were worth far less. It’s still equipped with its flat-six engine and has since received a whale-tail style rear spoiler.

And for one of the cooler finds of the collection, check out this 1986 Toyota 4×4 Turbo pickup. The turbocharged Toyota pickup was a short-lived offering and one that didn’t find many takers when new. Most of the ones we see come up for sale today are the 2WD variant, so finding a turbocharged 4×4 with the preferred 5-speed is quite a find. The truck also appears to have a gorgeous body with no signs of the rust that typically plagues Toyotas of this vintage. Bidding is currently sitting at $11,000, which seems like a solid deal for now. I suspect this and many of the other vehicles listed will fetch a fair price, as Mr. Rusk apparently had an eye for worthwhile acquisitions in addition to being generous in spirit. I was bidding on the ’76 T Bird. Seemed like a good deal, at first. But, Alabama is a bit too far to go, for a pig in a poke.

I was absolutely amazed at some of the cars up for auction. I can not wait to see what else is going to be coming up. If I only had the money and space.

I would love to own the 1986 Toyota truck. I had a 1986 Toyota 4×4 pickup some 10 yrs ago. It was the best truck I ever owned. Rust had gotten the best of it so I sold it. I regret that decision to this day. Should have restored it. 🤦

I’ve been following the results of this auction. Not the most valuable stuff, but that is good for us less than wealthy guys.

There have been some great bargains.
