The Road Runner debuted in 1968 as a budget-minded muscle car, based on the mid-size Plymouth Belvedere platform. Chrysler worked a deal with Warner Bros. for the Road Runner and Coyote likenesses and had a horn developed that would go “beep beep” when used. The seller’s 1970 edition of the car has been in the same family all along, but it hasn’t run in 20 years. It’s time for a restoration, but the heir to the auto is not a car guy, so he’s hoping a Road Runner fan will undertake the work. Located in Corona, California, this Plymouth is available here on eBay where the bidding is at $29,100 and counting.
As the story goes, the seller’s wife’s parents bought the vehicle new in California and it moved on to her during the high school years. She has since passed on and her husband, the seller, wants to find someone who will appreciate the car as much as they did. It’s a pillared coupe with a 383 cubic-inch V8 and an automatic, one of 6,888 built in 1970. It’s been garage-kept and covered since 2001, yet it accumulated more than 127,000 miles prior to that.
This Road Runner is an unrestored, unmolested Plymouth with matching numbers. Other than replacing the exhaust and the seat covers in the 1980s, everything else may be close to original. The body and paint aren’t perfect, but the only rust is said to be in the trunk. Photos of the undercarriage portray a very solid automobile.
Because it’s one family car, they kept receipts from the day the car was purchased in 1970 and the seller has those documents for the buyer’s reference. Other than the dash pad and droopy headliner, the interior looks passable. Assuming the engine isn’t seized from sitting for two decades, perhaps this would be a modest restoration project at most.
Now this car shows potential and I know first hand a loose torque converter and these run really well. Square Road Runner is cool.and somebody is going to have a nice ride and hopefully won’t have to do more than the usual things to make it road worthy again.
Freshen engine, address trunk, Dash pad/Headliner. Drive
People are still bidding? Seems like the first guy with $718 would have grabbed it. (Oh, just the license plate you say?)
I had one fluo with black strip 4 speed !
The 383 and 3spd Torque-flite automatic transmission are a great combination. Beautiful big hwy machine right here for somebody to enjoy
Current bid:
US $32,100.00
Not cheap, but it doesn’t need money spent on a restoration. Buff the paint fix the issues with the interior, make it road worthy and drive it.
