This 1984 Buick Riviera is four decades old now but a brochure touting it as being a “contemporary classic” seems like it would still apply today. It’s a car that most people could use as a daily driver, a weekend car, or a cross-country road trip car. Or all three. The seller has it posted here on craigslist in the Franklin Park, Pennsylvania area and they’re asking $10,000 or best offer. Here is the original listing, and thanks to T.J. for the tip!
This gorgeous, visually flawless Riviera has traveled an average of just 1,850 miles a year over the last 40 years, having been owned by just one family since new. The current owner says that it’s now in winter storage and that could be why it looks so nice – although we don’t know that it has been stored every winter since 1984, I’m just assuming that. And you know what they say about assuming…
The sixth-generation Riviera was made for model years 1979 through 1985 and they were the first front-wheel drive models for Riviera. It’s almost hard to believe that the late 1970s and 1980s gave us such nice cars as the sixth-gen Riviera and similar Eldorado and Toronado. There isn’t a full photo of the rear but from the two detail photos provided, it looks as perfect as the rest of the car does.
This car has Riviera’s standard 55/45 three-passenger cloth (velour) front seating and as expected, it looks great. By this time, the Riviera had standard power windows and power locks, standard air-conditioning, standard cruise control, and much more. The back seat looks like new and Hagerty is at $8,800 for a #3 good-condition car and $18,200 for a #2 excellent car. This could be a very good deal.
The engine is an Oldsmobile-sourced 307-cu.in. OHV V8 with 140 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque when new. Sending power through a Turbo-Hydramatic automatic to the front wheels, the seller says this one has: “new tires, new EGR valve, new gas cap, new map sensor, everything works except power antenna.” How much is this Riviera worth?
I had a 85, Loved that car until it got T boned and was totaled. Great driver and ride. I bought a new Buick Regal to replace it, but it didn’t get the nice ride the Riv had
These are great. It’s too nice to be a daily driver, probably why it was stored all winter. I wish I had another garage bay for it
This Riv is just so clean. This was someones baby for decades. And hearing winter storage makes me think they did that with this Riv since it was new. I always liked this generation. The interior and everything looks immaculate. Sure hope wherever it goes that it gets a climate controlled garage.
Elegance.
This car is sweet,my mom and girlfriend had one, never really had any trouble with them except had to rebuild the carb, big deal!

Love it! I had two blue and brown.
I had a 1980 with the 350. I bought it from a friend who wrecked it.
I fixed it and drove it a couple years before selling. Trouble free car aside from the headliner glue/material constantly deteriorating on you.
A real Buick!
I bought a brand new 1983 Riviera, black w grey velour and grey half roof, beautiful car, severely underpowered, that 307 Oldsmobile engine was an anchor, another friend had a 79 with the 350, totally different car engine wise, 70 mph here you need a strong wind, or drop it off the side of a building
I had a Blue 1985 and thinking back it was one of my favorite cars. I guess because of the weight and front wheel drive it got thru snow better than any car I ever had with the exception of the car I have now. It’s a Lexus ES250 with all wheel drive.
Look at Buick today. How the once mighty have fallen thanks to total mismanagement by GM. Listing deleted likely because some smart person bought the car. $10,000 buys very little today. Smart move. Love these Rivs.
My mom had a 79. These cars have a lot of class and they rode good too for a fwd car.
