One-Family ‘Yota: 1982 Toyota Pickup SR5

If Toyota’s reputation for reliable vehicles wasn’t already cemented by the Land Cruiser, then the Toyota Pickups of the 1980s certainly set the bar for reliability. Small as they were, these were some of the mightiest trucks ever produced known for being willing and ready to take large amounts of use and abuse and never missing a beat. Because of this reputation, most examples today are rusty and battered, though enthusiasts have begun restoring them. This 1982 Toyota Pickup SR5 is a one-family vehicle that has been cared for and maintained, never seeing the abuse so many of these trucks did. Find this clean 155,000 mile example here on eBay in Washington state with bidding at $4,000 and no reserve! 

The interior is about as good as one can expect for a Toyota truck of this vintage with 155,000 miles, if not better. Though durable, the dashboards are prone to warping over time. With the exception of a very visible wear spot on the driver’s side seat bolster, this interior could help this truck pass for a much lower-mileage example. All of the gauges work except for the tachometer, and the radio and clock work too! This truck is equipped with the popular SR5 option package (Sport Rally 5-speed), which is also the highest optioned truck available.

Hooked up to the original 5-speed manual transmission is the original Toyota 22R 2.4 liter inline four cylinder engine, which is original except for the addition of a Weber carburetor and obvious service items. According to the seller, it starts right up every time even in the cold! All of the drivetrain is stock and unmolested, and the seller states that the 4×4 transfer case engages smoothly and works well.

Aside from the Weber carburetor, the only other non-original part of this truck is the rear bumper which has been replaced with a Smittybuilt tube bumper. The paint is all original, and the bed is clean and nice thanks to the bed cover. These trucks tend to rust out before anything else, so the fact that this truck has never been rusty is truly impressive. As the seller mentions, these are desirable and sought after trucks, especially when they haven’t been abused off road or as work trucks. If this truck sells for $4,000, someone is getting a good deal on an up and coming classic.

    Well, it cleaned up nice. I’d like to see what it looked like before the flipper got hold of it and drown it in Armour All. He could at least wipe the overspray off the plastic trim and maybe wait a day to let it evaporate a bit.

    Nice truck. They rusted quickly in New England. A good friend of mine had one right after college. Reliable but rust ate it up. This one looks very solid, and 155k isn’t a lot of miles for a Toyota. Someone will enjoy it.

    Tires aren’t supposed to have a diamond gloss finish. Whenever I see this I look for J.C. Whitney type add on parts. They seem to go hand in hand.
    I’ve don’t recall ever seeing leaf springs bent up at the middle mounting point. That was a new one.
    Not a bad looking truck if this is what you’re after.

      Are you the owner of the truck. If so let me know. I have questions about the Weber carb. I own a 1982 4×4 blue that I bought brand new with 6 miles on it and now 280000 miles on it.
      So back to Weber carb you probably experienced carb issue with original carb. It starts, then when it get warm , take foot off pedal motor shuts off. So was that your issue and that why you put a Weber on it ?

        i had an 82 that did that it has a fuel shut off on the carb that cuts the fuel off when going down road and cuts it back on when idling. you can ground the black wire going to the fuel shut off and that will stop the cutting off at idle or replace the computer

    I had a few of these in the 90s I really liked the 4cyl,5spd . Not a lot of power, but great on gas and SOOO dependable. Also ,just fun to putt around in.
    This style-era truck might be the next,get them cheap and they wind up being very collectable . AKA like the VW bus 50s-80s. Who would have thought a old vw bus would turn into what they are now! Many times in the 80s-90s they where free,just get it gone

    Weber or not, it’s a fairly simple carb and gets the job done. The factory ones are expensive and fussy. As for the 22R and the injected RE, great little engines but if you neglect oil changes and don’t do timing chain service, then things can get bad quick.

    In Washington state they are still using trucks like this everyday.In the rust belt the frames rusted out. Like the guys said Good truck and reliable. I would inspect every square inch of the frame. if its clean and you need a good truck, buy it.Don’t let the high mileage scare you…

      155,000 is high mileage?? Not on a Toyota truck!! My 1998 Tacoma SR5 has over 461,000 miles and runs perfect. The rear brakes have never been touched nor has the A/C ever been serviced but other things have needed some attention. It’s on its third water pump, fourth alternator, sixth set of front brakes and third timing chain. I’ve lost track of how many tires.

    I had a 1981 SR5 that I stupidly sold. It had been drug through the Downey Toyota catalog before I bought it, I think it was just over a year old when I bought it. By time I was through with it, it had 8″ of suspension lift and 15/38 Ground Hawg tires. It was my daily driver/mud bogger/trail runner. It was a simply amazing little truck.

      I’m not sure I’d agree the bid is too high, that other website, what’s it called?? Bring-A-Tampon or something got $15,000 for a slightly more original one a few months back.
