One Hot SUV: 1992 GMC Typhoon

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Remember GMC’s 1991 muscle truck, the Syclone? It was a one-year offering and it was replaced by the Typhoon, an SUV, for 1992 and 1993. It used the same turbocharged 4.3-liter V6, so it was as equally capable as the Syclone. Production numbers would be low, with fewer than 4,700 copies built in two model years. This Apple Red example is one of them and looks to be in great shape although it was in an accident 22 years ago. Located in Brooklyn, New York, this AWD vehicle is available here on eBay with no reserve and the latest bid is $8,950.

With a turbocharger, the Typhoon generated 280 hp under the hood, along with 360 lb.-ft. of torque. That equated to 14.6 seconds in the quarter mile at 95 mph. It used a modified version of the Vortec engine from other GMC and Chevy trucks and SUVs. It was paired with a 4L60 4-speed automatic transmission. The Typhoon was arguably prettier than the Syclone as it could be had in a variety of colors other than black. The seller’s SUV is one of just 345 built during 1992 with red paint and a gray leather interior.

According to the seller, this ’92 Typhoon was the 433rd example to be produced that year. It looks to be in great physical condition, though the seller-provided Auto Check report shows nine owners and one accident in the past 31 years. So, no one party kept the vehicle for very long. That being said, it’s still a head-turner, even at 105,000 miles. It’s not in perfect shape, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be a hit at Cars & Coffee.

There’s no indication of any work that may be needed. Even the factory air conditioning blows cold like it’s supposed to. The Syclone and Typhoon were perhaps the hottest non-automobiles to come out of Detroit since the Dodge Lil Red Express pickup from late 1977 using police interceptor engines!

What I remember is going to the local GMC dealership in my 1991 Mustang GT convertible to check out a new Typhoon. I was told that they would need to run a credit check before allowing me to test drive a Tyhpoon, I was a mechanical engineer living with his parents – it would have been a cash transaction. I declined, and held on to the Mustang until the ’93 Camaro came out. Absolutely zero regrets.

This was the precursor to the Trailblazer SS and to an extent the Hellcat Durango , which is my current daily . The others were previous daily drivers and all a blast to drive . Nothing more satisfying than whoopin’ up on a “performance car” with a SUV . I put a Pro-Charger on my TBSS and as usually happens , I found the weak links in the driveline . The Typhoon and Durango I left stock and had/have not had issues . If this weren’t so far away I would be biddin’ .

Perfect vehicle to freshen up and keep. Depending on the sale price will continue to go up in value

I remember seeing them on the road along with the little S10 style truck but never got the chance to drive one or challenge one to a street race. I don’t want to own it because I have only had one dependable GM product I should have kept it. However I would like the chance to put one of these or the little truck through a few hot laps just to check it out.

I have always wanted one of these. The bid is approaching 14 K now, which is still a good deal if it is as nice as it appears.
