Only 8,600 Miles? 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

OK, it’s not a barn find! But then everything on Barn Finds isn’t one or needs to be one. This 1969 Boss 429 Ford Mustang gets props for being what it is, what some would consider a pinnacle muscle car. Unfortunately, the details and images are rather limited for such a notable find. This Mustang is located in Eagan, Minnesota and is available, here on Hemmings for $385,000 (Yikes!). Thanks to Boot for this most expensive discovery!

Barn Finds has had its fair share of Boss 429 coverage before, so I won’t repeat the history and the where-with-all that brought the Boss 429 into existence for two years. What is worth mentioning is the fact that this Mustang is a claimed 8,600-mile example and one of only 859 produced that year. One other minor point of styling, besides the obvious differences between a ’69 and ’70 Mustang, is the hood scoop. On a ’69, it’s painted body color whereas on a ’70 it’s finished in black. Nevertheless, the scoop on this Boss is Raven Black, just like the rest of the exterior, and its finish presents like a new, it lends credence to the low mileage claim. As has been stated before, one of the most obvious external differences between a Boss 429 and a Boss 302 is the lack of trim, flat black, stripes, and badging on the 429 version – its overall presentation is cleaner. In this case, I wonder if it’s too clean as I can’t spy the “Boss 429” decal that should be prominently displayed on the driver’s side fender. It may be there but the two images of the driver’s side aren’t too revealing.

1969 Boss 429 engine – not the actual motor

The biggest error with this listing is a lack of an engine image – after all, that’s what this car is all about, the engine. When a subject has one outstanding feature, it needs to be played! Anyway, it should be a 375 gross HP, semi-hemi, 429 CI V8, homologated for NASCAR’s then Grand National class. It’s a spectacular looking, and performing engine, and there is nary a reference to it. The sole transmission choice was a four-speed manual and that’s what’s in place here.

That’s about it, this listing states no more. There are no images of the interior, not even the simplest of descriptions so your guess is as good as anyones. Remember, the seller wants $385,000 for this Mustang and what you can learn from this parsimonious listing is minimal. Sure, you can contact the seller, and maybe they’ll send you more images, or a video clip, answer some of your questions, but for this kind of outsized scratch, he should be putting on the Ritz. And with that, I say GLWTS, how about you?

The BOSS 302 also had no quarter panel scoops or the medallion above it

There are several turn key 600cid “Boss 429” style engines consisting of aftermarket heads sitting on OE blocks on eBay right now.

In my humble opinion , the ’69 Boss 429 comes close to matching the 1970 Hemi-‘Cuda as the best looking Muscle-Cars EVER!!!!. I think the Boss ‘9 DOES have a better looking interior however. Great, great cars, probably the epitome of what Muscle-Cars were/are all about……Neither one was perfect on the street however and needed constant fiddling practically after “every run”. Many of these got smoked by the crazy 440-6 BBl, or 440-6 Packs!!

There are a lot of reasons to buy a Boss 429, meeting women is not one of them necessarily. For an investment at that price? Expect to hold on to it for quite some time. However if one has the money, the space and is prepared to buy a rare car this is up their on my bucket list. For performance only there are other alternatives such as the 351 Cleveland, 427, 427 SOHC, 428 or even ford modern v-8’s like the coyote, voodoo or 5.2 GT500 may be some interesting options for one that likes to build out. IMHO I like the 1969, 1970, 2013, 2014 Mustang styling the best.

Such a rare breed of horse! I clearly remember being in our local Lancaster, NY Ford dealership in 1969 and seeing the 429 badge on a very hot looking Mustang sitting over to the right side of the showroom. “Wow! What is this!?” I wondered. Well, this 13 year old was so impressed that the image of the ignition wires running deep into the well in those valve covers has never left my memory. And yeah, I was the wise-ass kid who pulled the #1 plug wire out, just to see what it was all about and then didn’t push it back in all the way. Sorry to whomever had to figure that one out all those years ago. Now my conscience is clear. Amazing car with an amazing engine.

I bought that car, I thought the cam was responsible for the rough idle, couldn’t do better than 15.9 in the quarter…

Yes very nice, but for a pricey car, only 6 photos and a very short description?

If you Google 8,600 mile Boss 429 you will find half a dozen write ups on this car. It seems to be well known, however, it’s also been for sale since at least June of 2019.

Best line of the day. “OK, it’s not a barn find! But then everything on Barn Finds isn’t one or needs to be one.” Agreed. I come here to look at the super rare, super cool, super expensive as well as the super junk…I don’t care where they were “found”. It’s entertainment.

A Boss 429 was never intended to be a drag car engine. It would however run all day long at high RPMs, like it was made to do. Back in the day, guys that tried them in drag cars, went back to 427s and 428s, after seeing them not being good drag car engines.

The serious looking performance Mustang, the Boss 429. Best looking of all classic Mustangs for me, the Boss 302 is close, the Mach 1 is great too. But there’s always been something about these Boss 9’s, total eye candy I guess.
For those who seriously consider buying this long time collector car at that price, pictures and descriptions are irrelevant. They’ll be all over it in person.
    Keep em coming, Barn Finds!!
