Overland Ready: 1977 Jeep Cherokee

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1977 Jeep Cherokee has a lot going for it, from excellent colors to a rebuilt and fortified 401 V8 engine. The truck has some other enhancements that make it ideally suited to a weekend on the trails or in the dunes, and the best part has to be that beautiful, (mostly) rust-free desert body. The Jeep has also been tastefully upgraded with numerous off-road friendly upgrades ranging from air lockers to a custom rear bumper that can hold up to three gas cans. It’s seemingly a well-executed restomod with the sort of upgrades that should inspire you to take it places most other trucks won’t go. Find it here on eBay with bidding at $8,000 and the reserve unmet.

The 401 has been rebuilt and balanced with forged, oversized pistons, and upgraded with a hot camshaft, headers, Borla muffler, rebuilt Turbo 400 automatic, and a Howell EFI conversion. The list goes on to include Doug Thorley headers, heavy-duty transmission cooler, and more. The suspension has also been fully sorted and treated to numerous upgrades, including a 2.5 inch Rancho lift kit, ABR air lockers front and rear, ABR air compressor, and 32 inch BF Goodrich tires. The Jeep also benefits from a custom front bumper with a receiver for a portable winch.

The interior is clean and stock in appearance, with what appears to be a crack-free dashboard. Inside you’ll find custom gauges and the controls for the Air Locker setup, along with a fire extinguisher if things get toasty. Pictures show that this Jeep has the factory Levi’s interior, although the front buckets are plenty faded. Overall, it’s not perfect inside, but it’s very nice for the year. Photos also show that the rear cargo hold has been outfitted with a thin, stow-away mattress that rolls out over the tailgate for catching a snooze while you’re on the road.

The ability to haul extra fuel with you is always useful when traversing the wide-open spaces of this great country of ours, and the Jeep also sports a 48-inch High-Lift jack, ice chest, power cables for the winch to run off either the front or rear bumpers, heavy-duty two-inch hitch, and lots of other smart details that make this Cherokee even more prepared for months on the road. The Jeep also comes with two fuel tanks, rock sliders, Cobra CB radio, and skid plates, to name a few other offroad-friendly features. Overall, it gives you the sense that the owner thought of everything, and this Jeep looks like an incredibly fun truck to take anywhere that pavement is an afterthought.

That rig has all the goods to be a hard core overland vehicle. Love the early wagoner for its utility. Wouldn’t have to go as far with the engine mods but would want this engine in a AMX though. He has a lot of time and money into this one. Wonder what the reserve is? 20K?

Wow – very well-built rig with lots of great mods and accessories. You can tell the owner that did the mods knew what they were doing. This is my style of rig.

Nice truck. I really like the slot/dish mags. They look great and give it a 1970’s feel, just like the exterior mounted Jerry cans and tailgate mounted spare.

It will be interesting to see how high the goes and whether it meets reserve. This won’t be cheap, for a good reason.

It’s well built and put together. Probably trailed hard around Moab !
    I wonder if it’s reasonably affordable ?

The ebay add says front and side airbags (in the feature section): I don’t get it.
