Mercedes-Benz made several different 190 series cars, with the 190b seeing production beginning in 1959 and running through 1961, a relatively short amount of time but they did manage to move more than 28,000 units. So while it’s not exceedingly rare, that was a long time ago it’s not exactly easy to find a nice example all these years later, much less a one-owner vehicle that’s largely in original condition. The 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190b here on eBay has been shown lots of love recently, and while it still needs to have a few details worked out the car seems well on its way to becoming a decent driver. So far, 33 bids have raised the price to $5,000, but there’s still time to place yours if you’ve been looking for an early-sixties Mercedes sedan. Plan on traveling to Bogata, Texas if you want to see it up close first.
This one’s got a pretty cool present, and its past isn’t bad either. The story here goes that business owners Wyatt and Lance Bush of Kravened Customs got word of this car and found out it had been a one-owner Benz parked in a Lone Star garage since 1972, as a timing chain issue took it off the road. The Bush Brothers have a YouTube channel called “Restored” and have posted a video lasting over an hour and a half, documenting the progress from how they found the Mercedes to the condition we see it in now. The paint is stated to be all original with no rust issues on the body, and while you can see a few dents and dings, it’s pretty great how they buffed the paint to shine as well as it does now.
One of the initial tasks was to get the 1.9L motor going, and the first order of business was to replace the timing chain and gears, followed by new spark plugs and wires, then a fresh oil change. According to the sellers, the 4-cylinder is now purring like a kitten and running great, but that’s off an external gas tank sitting in the trunk as the original fuel tank underneath needs to be dropped and cleaned out. There’s said to be no engine smoke, no unusual noises, and no overheating issues, but beware of the brakes, as they need to be gone through and are currently not functioning. But the clutch and factory 4-Speed manual transmission are both said to be A-OK.
Inside, things are showing a bit of wear, but overall it looks fairly decent in there and mostly complete. All of the gauges are thought to be working as they should with the odometer showing 15k miles, but it has rolled over. There’s also said to be zero rust in the floor pans and the door jambs are mentioned as being in fine shape as well, plus the trunk area is also stated to be clean. Hopefully, the next owner can perform a brake job and some fuel-system maintenance then have this one back on the road, at least for a while before having to deal with anything else major. What’s a reasonable price to pay for this Mercedes-Benz 190b?
Looks good in black. Fix up that rear driver’s side fender & taillight, detail the engine compartment, sort out the interior a bit and just drive it.
OMG, we three brothers rebuilt one of these in the early 70’s. We bought it for $!, from a woman who said it needed a battery or a starter. We tied a rope around the 190’s from bumper and the back of moms Vista Cruiser. We towed it 13 miles up the parkway. En-route we quickly discovered it was seized. Dad helped us with the cost of the motor repair. We actually did a complete rebuild in our parents garage. We got it running relatively quickly. Excited, we asked dad if we could register it ? “Just as soon as you can pay for your college education. Dad was tough, but always fair. We acquired needed body parts, including a red leather interior, from a number of junk yards. It was simple, fun frugal, (during gas crisis) and unique. I hope someone has as much fun with this one as we did with ours !
