The second owner of this 1974 AMC Javelin placed it in storage in 2003, and after 16-years of the car sitting idle, he has decided that the time has come to part with this classic. It looks to be a largely solid vehicle and is just waiting for someone to revive it and return it to active duty. The Javelin is located in Drums, Pennsylvania, and is listed for sale here on eBay. The owner has set a BIN of $5,000 for the car, but if you feel like today could be your lucky day, the option is also there to make an offer.
This Snow White Javelin is a pretty solid looking car. There is some rust in the trunk floor, but it isn’t really that bad. The rest of the car looks to be free of any major rust issues. The worst that I have been able to find is a few pinholes in the passenger side rocker. I also get the impression that there might be a past repair to the lower quarter panel on the same side, but I can’t be completely sure. The exterior trim and chrome appear to be in reasonable condition, although the rocker molding is missing on the driver’s side.
Powering the Javelin is a 304ci V8, which produces 150hp. The transmission is a 3-speed automatic, while the Javelin is also equipped with power steering and power brakes. The Javelin last ran when it was parked back in 2003, and no effort has been made to revive the car. The owner doesn’t indicate whether the engine even turns freely, so your guess is as good as mine there. Sorry.
If you replaced the torn cover on the driver’s seat, the black interior of the Javelin would really look good. The headliner looks as-new, the rest of the upholstery is close to spotless, the dash and pad are in nice condition, and I think that the carpet would come up quite well with a good clean. The gauge cluster looks really clean and features a Tic-Toc-Tach. The only down-side is that someone has fitted an aftermarket radio/cassette player to the car. I use the word “fitted” pretty loosely here because it actually looks like it was fired at the lower dash from a bazooka. Still, it looks like it could be removed and the area restored with no great dramas. Apart from the fact that the interior is in such overall good condition, the inclusion of air conditioning would have to be seen as a nice little added extra.
With so little rust, this 1974 Javelin looks like a really solid candidate for restoration. Combine the solid body with the tidy interior, and it looks like a very encouraging package. Having no information on the state of the engine is a blow, and hopefully, the owner might be willing to see if the motor will turn by hand for any serious prospective buyer. If it does, then I personally think that the Javelin would be worth every cent of the BIN price.
I had one of these in ’79. It had the AMX trim option snd the 304. These were pretty large cars by today’s standards. I remember being so bummed out when I found that horsepower numbers on my car in a Chilton’s guide. (Groan.) Still it looked great and after my buddy out ran me in his 318 Dart Swinger I learned to not care. I loved that it was different and I did not own just another Camaro like so.many in my highschool’s. parking lot. ;)
I like the 68-70 Javelin and AMX bodies. Had a ’68, white with a blue interior. The previous owner smoked and had a tendency to put her butts out on the transmission hump rather than the “ash receiver”. I’ve been Jonesin’ for one, lately, but they’ve gotten really expensive
I wonder how they folded both of the front fenders under like that? A friend of mine had one years ago that was light brown with gold strips on the sides. I think it was much nicer looking then white. Always liked these cars, this one too.
Not inconceivable that someone took this car over a couple tall parking bollards after consuming a couple tall brewskis. Wonder how the radiator support and front suspension did while maneuvering the obstacle course?
Good lord these things are hideous. I’m a huge fan of the 68-69 AMX’s, but they really crapped the bed when they came out with these.
Richard Teague wanted AMC to continue production of the 2-seat AMX, and whipped up his own adaptation of the ’71 front clip to the existing AMX body.

I saw a stock ’74 Javelin at a car show, and the whole damn concept was perfect: proportions, stance, colors, interior. Sure, this car in this condition doesn’t look that impressive, but in the right color combination these things are really cool.
ugly. what is with These front Fenders?? they look odd, like frontwheels is too fahr back..
looks like someone pulled with straps to the front wheels and that’s what damaged the front fenders.
The chicken wire and bondo in both rear quarters isn’t a good sign
Might be a deal at 2K if the engine isn’t stuck
Nice job on the 5 mph bumpers. No diving board bumpers here.
I like this one better. Has the cool roof…except the dent! This is one of the flattering color schemes.

There is a 99% that I cut the shifter hole and installed the front carpet in this car, including putting those two hideous screws in the drivers side door arm rest….all of that in 1 minute and 35 seconds….then off to the next car on the line…Those screws were my Rookie Supervisor’s moronic idea to keep the arm rest from pulling away from the door panel…it doesn’t appear to have worked very well…seeing this brought back a lot of memories….Thank You Adam Clarke for putting this car on Barn Finds!
Well, we just had a mean looking black ’73 a day or two ago with a 401, now this one with the low performance 304, or maybe most cars like this were dogs in ’74, excluding the Trans Am. This could look pretty darn cool with the right set up, younger people will look at it with a deer in the headlights expression. Keep em interested.
I like the earlier version of this car like so many other people did!!! The loss of power and government regulations made them powerless and ruined what the AMX stood for!! The interior in this one looks pretty nice and I’m sure it could be powered up with a cam and some headers with a 4 barrel!!!
