Pony Alternative: AMC Javelin SST 360


Wearing period Keystone Classic wheels on the rear and the original AMC rallye wheels on the front and with faded and dull paint, you might dismiss this SST as just another tired old car. But look a little closer and there’s some interesting features. This Javelin is located in Hillsborough, New Jersey and is for sale here on eBay where there’s a buy-it-now of $5,500 although lower bids can be placed. Only 17,707 SST’s were made in 1971, far fewer than its pony car rivals. This was the first year for the generation 2 body style, with fender creases like a Corvette and an integrated roof spoiler. While the AMX gathered all the sporting glory, the SST provided a nice level of luxury at a list price of just under $3,000.

AMC Javelin SST Engine

This car has the desirable 360 V-8/4-speed combination and comes complete with a limited-slip differential. The interior doesn’t look too bad with the exception of the front seats and with it already running and driving, this offers a less-expensive alternative to the Camaros, Challengers and Mustangs available. There is some rust in the fenders and front frame rails, though, so be careful. What do you think about American Motors cars now that a lot of time has passed since the last one. Were they quirky but viable alternatives, or are you stuck on the traditional big three?

    Great example of a muscle car. More rare then the big three and cheaper. I’d buy it!!!

    I like AMCs but I’d be concerned that since they’re less popular perhaps there are less repro parts available for restoration also??


    Mark E. There are many clubs and enthusiasts available to help out. Although it is true there are less restoration parts available.It doesn’t make them less desireable at all. There are plenty of mechanical and interior parts available. 71-74 parts all interchange. The windshield as well as doors and trunk lid all interchange from 68-74. Don’t be afraid.

    I preferred the older shape without the fender creases but again just personal taste.

    I too am more partial to the 70 model but this 71 looks to be a real survivor and the seller seems to be honest about the rust and it’s reasonably priced for a musclecar. I like the Javelin’s because I’m one who doesn’t want to follow the crowd or have something like everyone else. It gets awful boring that way.

    I know a piere cardain edition with rhe funky striped seats sitting in kingsville ohio. Neat cars but not many left around here. Passed on two earlier amx’s as a teen. Maybe someday I will try my hand at an amc. Im thinking hornet or gremlin though. Gotta be early little bumper cars and stick shift though.
