Project Ute: 1966 Chevrolet El Camino

The Chevrolet El Camino was a “ute ” (short for utility coupe). Launched in 1959 in response to the Ford Ranchero, it was a 2-door wagon modified to be a truck. It took a break from 1961 to 1963, returning in 1964 based on the new mid-size Chevelle. This 1966 edition is likely a rough project that’s incomplete (no seats, at a minimum). Located in Medford, Oregon, this Bow-Tie pickup is available here on craigslist for $3,500. “Curvette” brings us another tip for consideration.

Because the ’66 El Camino was derived from the Chevelle, its redesigns and styling updates tracked with that series. So, when the Chevelle was refreshed in 1966, so was the El Camino. Its only competitor, the Ranchero, was marketed by Ford through 1979, but the El Camino soldiered on. 1987 would be its last year as Chevrolet retired its rear-wheel-drive platform in advance of moving to FWD. About 35,000 El Caminos found new homes in 1966.

We assume this El Camino has been sitting for some time. The seller says this is a “rare opportunity to purchase an early gen El Camino,” which potential buyers will have to decide if they agree with that assessment. It has a V8 engine, but we’re not told if it’s a 283 cubic inch motor (the first up from an inline-6) or something beefier. It’s said to be paired with a manual transmission (“3-on-the-tree”?), but no mention is made regarding the mechanical health of this unit.

The body looks rough, and the color of the exterior panels don’t always match, so rust or accident repairs may have been made. The mileage could be 110,000, but the odometer no longer functions. The factory bench seat is gone, and more could be missing. The seller says the Chevy’s original trim, headlights, and taillights are present. We’re told you may be able to take this project home for less than $3,500. Does that include you?

Wow, amazing how sellers will throw up a few partial photos and nearly no description, yikes.

The Subaru Brat was a competitor starting in the late ’70s and the Dodge Rampage entered the market in 1982.
