Ram Air 455 Survivor: 1970 Pontiac GTO

You can ask just about anyone you meet about a GTO and they have a story for you about fast the one they saw was, or perhaps even local urban legends of GTO’s being the fastest street cars in their area. There is no getting past it, GTO’s are just plain cool, and this 1970 model is about as nice as they come. Completely original, this Goat is thought to be a two owner car, and in fabulous condition. The seller has been meticulous in his ownership and is offering this car for $26,000. Check out this beauty here on craigslist out of Raleigh, North Carolina. Rocco B. has turned in another awesome find! Bravo Rocco on this sharp submission!

Although this GTO is a survivor, it has been maintained and repaired along the way. The 455 is a mighty sight to see, and I would assume runs without any concerns. The engine compartment is a bit dirty, but it certainly benefit from a solid detailing.  There is no rust to be found other than some surface rust on the heads and intake. The craigslist ad shows 44,440 miles, but I feel that the seller would “talk up” the mileage if it was that low. Perhaps it is that low and I am just skeptical?

While the thought of a green interior may not sound very pleasant, I feel that this interior is actually very attractive. Very close to show room new, I almost dare to say that this interior is “perfect”.

The exterior much like the interior appears virtually perfect, but the seller mentions that there is some paint flaking off of the nose, and that the driver side glass has some scratches. I could learn to live with those flaws as this car is simply stunning. The green on green color way is a subtle choice for this muscle car, almost making it seem like a bit of a sleeper. Vehicles of this condition are few and far between, so would you jump on this GTO for its asking price?

My story begins in HS with my math/gym teacher having a ’70 GTO ,blue on blue 455RA. Remember him giving us a ride to one of our local basketball game… after lots of bugging. We were all gearhead-jocks. One of the players had a new ’77 Z28 and we handily dusted him off in a impromptu drag. Couldn’t do that today! Arguably one of the best looking muscle cars of the ’70’s IMO. Seems like a fair price for a nice survivor.

My high school was divided into the gearheads or the jocks. The jocks knew very little about how cars worked. They generally stayed away from the gearheads as the gearheads were much stronger overall. BTW, beautiful car,

I had the gold twin to this car in the early 70’s, fast yes but I got mine from a Dodge dealer as compensation for my Van I returned because the brakes kept locking up and I refused to make any more payments so they gave me the GTO for what I had already paid down, I hated the color and the rubber nose on the car, I’m a chrome bumper guy and after 1 65 GTO and 2 67s the looks just didn’t cut it so I sold it. Feature car is nice if you like green and that hideous front bumper that paint doesn’t stay on very well even after a couple years old.

Jason, All I know is the 70 Goat I got which was 4 years old at the time had paint chipping of that crappy bumper. Maybe it was a factory defect but not to get political but you must be a liberal to use such hateful attacks on people you don’t even know.

As a Leftist I resent the tired far right extremist whine of folks like JW. But I also think that Jason ought to take it easy when other folks make observations that dont comport with his experience, otherwise we’ll end up like that other car web site….and after all we like Barn FInds because its not like that other car web site

OK I see where this is going and I will not bite, I’ll just take a break from posting and read your comments bashing others. As far as my 5th place trophies here a just a few of the 1st place ones and where I’m from 3rd place is the least you can get.

OK JW and Jason, enough lets keep this disagreement PEACEFUL.
I can agree with both of you on the Endura Bumper, because I have seen them both ways. I have had 2 1970 GTO’s in my time, and growing up in and around a Body Shop, maybe I can help out. They were good front bumper if painted correctly with the flex additive as Jason pointed out, but on the other hand as they aged parking lots were there worst nightmare, always seemed to me people love to shove a shopping cart into your car instead of putting them in the cart rack, lazy people I guess.
It seemed to me the more these bumper aged the more they would chip, and once they chip it seems to grow. Also if you have a Endura bumper repainted, it have to be done correctly, it has to be sanded down completely not just the chipped area, then repainted by somebody that really knows what they are doing. I am 55 and like I said have owned 2 GTO’s, but both were repainted by men that had been trained on repainting of them as I said I grew up in body shop even worked in it for many years, and I still repaint my own cars but even I had them repainted by somebody else because of the bumper cars exposed to more sun and heat–such as those from the Southwest or California–tended to deteriorate quicker than others, but nearly all suffered from cracked paint or actual cracks in the plastic after a while. Fortunately, the preponderance of plastic bumpers on modern cars has led to a wide range of flexible body fillers and flex agents for primer and paint suitable for repair of the Enduras.

Clean machine, and it aught to be with the amount of work the seller has done to it. No, it’s not the fastest goat ever built with the low rev 455HO, but it sure is nice to see one in this condition for a change without a stratospheric price tag… Unlike the 440 charger listed today.

looking at the options list …… gone are the days when an upsized v8 engine costs less than a vinyl top, pwr steering, automatic trans, radio, functioning snorkel, or disc brakes. *sigh*

Wish it was a 4 speed car…….but then I wouldn’t be able to afford it! Lol, guess I could live with an automatic 455 HO Ram Air car! This car is only about 1 1/2 hours away from me. The seller doesn’t have a phone number posted, makes me believe it’s a SCAM! I’m not up on Pontiac values……..what do you think it’s worth as it stands?

I looove the green. But then I was the 16 year old kid that convinced his dad to buy a 1969 Bonneville thst color green.

If I was designated driver I wouldn’t be drinking. Or that was the idea.

Beautiful car, and the ad is already gone! Ahh, the era of green cars. I would never set out to buy a green car! That being said, I’ve owned two. My very first car, which I bought a few days before I turned 16, was a 69 Buick Riviera GS. It had green/olive paint, a very dark green vinyl top, and green interior. Bucket seats and center console, power everything, and a torque monster! Two cars later, I bought a 72 Pontiac Grandville convertible, 455 engine, green with a white top and green interior, fully loaded of course. I paid $1500 for each of them, and was lucky enough to buy them from the widows of the original owners.
As for GTO’s, my favorite year is 1964, followed by 65-67. Never cared much for this body style, but this clean beauty with a 455, I’d buy it in a second if I was in a position to buy one. But looks like somebody already jumped on it and is going to have a ton of fun!

Reminds me of the ’71 my brother had: blue on blue with dealer-installed blue vinyl top, 400/auto.
The 455 was a great boulevard cruiser engine. It was the second most popular engine for the 1970 GTO, with over 4000 built, a little over 10% of GTO production.
Sadly I bet this car will be a Judge clone within a year.

Deleted by seller, not flagged. Was listed at a fair price to move quickly, not surprised someone jumped all over it.

      Exactly.

The 70 455 was just a passenger car engine installed in a GTO. The Ram Air III’s and IV’s were much more stout. This car was priced on the low side of fair, but was not given away. It’s sad that we’ve reached a point where cars that aren’t overpriced are often deemed a scam.

I’m thinking a flipper bought it and in a month it will be back online for near double that price with a whopper of a back story with no documentation on the story.

This rust bucket recently sold for $23,600…

    https://barnfinds.com/not-grandparents-car-1972-chevrolet-chevelle-ss/

And that was just an ordinary 1972 Chevelle SS with a basic 402 and an automatic – far more common than a 455 GTO! In this era of disrespect for money, I’d expect this car to have an asking price north of $50k. I call scam. No way this is real. Bring a really big friend and exercise your Second Amendment right to bear arms if you’re going to be brave enough to check this out!

Dont knock the 455 as the 455 GTO my friend had was the only car that could
beat my full built 400 that would run
    7.50 in 1/8 mile at 4,000 lbs.
455 add Ramair 3 cam with 390 grars
and not many cars will touch on the street.

Have to agree that not every fairly priced car listed is a scam. Seller probably thought that he was making a fair profit and that he didn’t want to deal with a bunch of morons for weeks on end that C.L. brings out.

I think the discussions on this site are most enjoyable when they are devoid of both insults and politics. Please post accordingly.

Back to the Goat, I like the clean looks of the 1970 GTO, though I would like to have a convertible. I’d love a white ’70 convertible to cruise around in on sunny days, 455, auto. on the column, Sandalwood bench seat interior, with a few personal touches such as the Judge front and rear spoilers, blacked out grille surrounds and air inlets, and ’71 sport mirrors, 15″ Rally II wheels with trim rings and black wall tires, and no badges or decals except the one GTO badge in the grille. I can dream.

In about 30 minutes I could be standing in front of this car and tell you what condition it is really in. In 30 years I might have enough to buy it. LOL. It is super nice condition wise. But alas it is green. We have 2 or 3 large antique car dealers in NC and a few small ones. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if one of them swooped down on this thing. Look for this car coming soon to an Ebay near you at twice the last ask.

Glad to hear it went to a good home.
BTW please, please, please don’t turn it into a Judge clone. Way too many of those around. It’s awesome the way it is!
      Good luck with it!
