Dodge was the last U.S. auto manufacturer to field a “pony car,” and it arrived in 1970 in the form of the Challenger. It was initially successful with sales of nearly 77,000 copies in the first year. But only 692 R/T models were produced with a retractable convertible top. The seller doesn’t say much about the car and provides only two photos, relying on fender tag codes to sell the vehicle. Located near Seattle, Washington, this Mopar project is available here on craigslist for $25,000. Hats off to Barn Finder “Curvette” for a tip on a rare muscle car.

If you wanted a hot Challenger in 1970, the R/T (Road/Track) was the way to go. It came with a standard 383 cubic inch V8 that was good for 335 hp. The fender tag confirms that’s how the seller’s car was built, but it’s not numbers-matching, though the car’s automatic transmission is. The few photos show us a rough and not likely complete Dodge that the seller admits its condition is “salvage” at 50,000 miles.

What else does the fender tag tell us? The Challenger left the factory finished in Dark Burnt Orange Metallic paint with a matching color bucket seat interior with a console. Assembled on 9/30/69, the car had a white drop-top, a Rallye instrument package and tachometer, power-assisted brakes, hood pins, but only an AM radio. Seller: Please add more photos and details!

2 car photos and email only will send more pictures and for $25,000. Wow I wonder if the Challenger will be sold with in the week. I don’t understand why people can’t take more pictures now and give people a chance to see the inside, back and right side. It’s not difficult. Do they have the parts for it? What a shame. 🐻🇺🇸
I agree! But did you see the “IYKYK”? Had to look that up! Means he knows what the car is worth and if you know what it is and how rare then you’ll enquire and come and see. He didn’t want to use much effort in the ad. The fender tag decode was from e-bodies.org so the son probably goes online and knows his Challengers and he knows the car is rare and if anyone is interested they’ll pursue him. Don’t even know what other parts it comes with. Yeah bare basic info.
Wow the seller doesn’t appear to want to sell it. 2 pic’s and no real description. And the condition is salvage? Does that mean it has a salvage title?
It’s only one state away from mark worman so I’m sure he knows about it so if he won’t touch it then that’s all you need to know.
I think the sheet of drywall beside it is worth more than the car. What a waste of time.
It needs at least $100K plus in parts, labor, paint…..
For a car that might get you $80K if its done right. Let the owner go restore it himself.
Maybe 100k for a professional check writer, many of us are capable and resourceful enough to achieve that feat for a fraction of that. Also it doesn’t have to have a concourse restoration to enjoy.
I bought a 70 Challenger R/T Convertible 383 auto power top ac with 56,00 miles and was sitting in garage in So. Cal for the last 35 years with ZERO rust and then got it running easily and paid 41k for it so what is this guy basing his price on? And I bought this year in May.
How did you find such a gem?
My Mom’s 1970 Challenger was one of the 692. Convertible (white), candy apple red body w/white interior, R/T, 383, slapstick auto. She sold it in a classic car auction in 1984. I would sell my soul to have that car back. This one? $25K is a joke. I’ll give you $10K maybe. It needs so much.
Just a showoff with no intension to sell. Thinks he is being cool having you ask for more information. Most likely does not know how to operate a camera.
