Rare Bench Seat! 1969 Ford Mustang Convertible

Ford treated the Mustang to its second modest restyle in 1969, with the car gaining an extra set of headlights for that year only. Though production numbers declined for the third year in a row, the Mustang held on to first place in sales, beating the Chevy Camaro by 50,000 units. This 1969 convertible looks like a barn find that will need work. But it may be somewhat rare, as it has a front-bench seat rather than buckets. Located on the back of a flatbed in Dallas, Texas, this likely dealer sale is available here on eBay, where the current bid is $4,700. But there’s a reserve to be met.

Mustang sales came in at 300,000 copies in 1969. While still strong, they were half that of the 1966 record. But the Mustang had virtually no competition in ’66 while almost everyone was in the game by the end of the decade. Convertible sales fell just short of 15,000 copies, but the number sold with a bench seat doesn’t seem to be available. Since a minority of coupes came with a bench seat, it follows that this car could be one of just a few hundred so equipped.

It’s too bad we don’t know the history of this Mustang. It probably sat for years, adding to the deterioration of the paint and interior. A 302 cubic inch V8 is likely under the hood with an automatic transmission to back it up. When the car last ran isn’t known, but it’s likely the buyer will have to work at reviving it mechanically. Including flushing out the entire fuel delivery system.

The seller says this car has spent its entire life in Texas, with the last few years inside a garage. The once burgundy paint has run its course, though rust doesn’t seem to be problematic. The convertible top looks okay, though it has no rear glass. And the tan interior has seen better days, with the upholstery full of cracks and slits from use and/or sitting. The seller offers free transportation (probably to buyers who meet his/her reserve), so maybe you won’t have to go fetch it.

This is the 4th time the dealer has listed this Mustang convertible on eBay, so far the auctions have ended between $3,650 and $6,500, none of which have met the reserve. Which doesn’t seem surprising, none of the other Mustangs he’s listed over the last 90 days have met their reserve either.

The seller has two other Mustangs listed with nothing meeting the reserve.

Of course the number of 1969 Mustangs with bench seats is available data. One just has to request that particular query as part of the Marti Report. This looks like Indian Fire, a cool color. Plenty of needed work here.

Kevin Marti also has produced a book titled Mustang By The Numbers. The number of bench seat cars would be included in that book. I do not have a copy or I would provide the number. Sorry.

You gotta be kidding me, a bench seat in a Mustang convertible??? Ford must have been really desperate in 1969. Trying to get anyone from 18-85 to buy a Mustang.

If you like your lady to sit next to you while you are driving a cool car, a bench seat is perfect!!

The bench seat is only an issue for the geekiest of collectors. Most people would ditch the bench (but keep it in the rafters for the geeks) add some buckets and a 5-speed conversion as part of a nice resto-mod.

Oh, gosh, so many of you never experienced the thrill and romance of the snuggling in bench seats?

Buckets were more of a marketing thing to convince us we had a sports car. Bucket seats…

ok comfort-wise, I suppose, but not those old mustang buckets, that are nothing like today’s. A bench seat today would require even more airbags, right?

Anyway, I remember both of us getting in the car through the driver door and her sliding over and the two of us staying in touch on bench seats. With three on the tree, she might do the shifting.

That open hole on the left rocker cover tells me the total sum needed to reserect this one is off the chart of logic.

Well , for all you youngsters and un romantic types, let me impart the wisdom of this bench seat.
In my youth I had a 72 Firebird and a 63 ford comet with a bench seat.
When it came to drive in movies or date night, the funky ford comet was “the best”.
    Nothing beats a bench seat!!!!

gtoforever I have to disagree best ever for “date nights ” was my 64 rambler 770 classic cross country with 50/50 split front seat that folded flat into the back seat to form a big comfy bed the car was a sleeper too on the road with a stock 327 3 on the tree with overdrive we put a 4 barrel and headers and that lil baby blue wagon would catch many drivers off gaurd
