Rare Drop-Top: 1970 Plymouth Road Runner

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Plymouth Road Runner was a hot commodity in the late 1960s, but as a convertible, not so much. It was only produced as a drop-top for two years (1969 and 1970) and the body style was dropped across all Chrysler B-bodies in 1971. This rare ’70 edition in Limelight has its original motor and was only one of 179 built with a 383 V8/4-speed combination. Located in Longmont, Colorado, this seldom-seen muscle car needs a lot of work and is available here on eBay for $50,000.

Perhaps the thought of a convertible didn’t match with the Road Runner’s initial budget image as only 1,890 copies were made in 1969 to be followed up by just 658 more in 1970. Road Runner sales overall were off quite a bit in ’70 vs. ’69, but that may be due in part to it being essentially the same car for the third year in a row. The seller is slightly more optimistic about production numbers, but the quantity built with no metal roof and painted in this Hi-Impact color must make the seller’s car quite rare. But it hasn’t been that many years ago a car like this would only go for a few hundred bucks.

Decoding of the Plymouth’s cowl tag supports the seller’s claims, although it would exude more confidence if the tag was still attached to the car. The engine (original) and transmission (not original) have been removed from the car to help make repairs and presumably are intact to go home with the buyer. No mention is made as to whether they require a rebuild.

The frame rails have rust issues, but the seller is including replacements from a donor car. The front bumper and grille are not on the car, and we’re not told if they have survived. Though the canvas top is white, the interior is black, but no photos are provided there (in fact, few pictures of the car are included in the listing). If you’d be interested in putting in a 440 V8 with a 6-pack, the seller has a rebuilt one that can be added to the deal for another $7,500.

Don’t forget the damage in the rear from dragging it off the roll back with the front end that high. At least this is a complete car compared to the pile of parts in Oklahoma.

Before he retired a friend bought on of these in purple that had been restored by some outfit in Oregon. He used retirement money as he figured it would go up in value faster than his stock portfolio. I dig these cars too.

The ad states that the K-member is out of the car and that the front end is on a jig. Probably a trailer axle strapped to the car.

    Wow this is a 50k ask…?
I’m sorry but even though it’s rare it’s going to easily take another 60k to bring it to showroom condition.
    Labor of love.

That 60k restoration is probably a conservative number. That baby needs alot of care.

$50k with only four bad photos of the car itself. GLWS.

To think I paid $1,200 for an FE5 1970 Road Runner with N96 from the original owner in 1973, makes me sick. Sold that thing for $950 in perfect condition. Oh, well, that was then, this is now.
