Rare Japanese Retro: 1996 Mitsuoka Galue

Mitsuoka is a Japanese niche vehicle manufacturer that specializes in attaching retro bodies to existing production models to create distinctive vehicles. It has released a faux Porsche 356, a Jaguar-inspired model called the Viewt, and even a K-2 microcar based on the FMR Tg500. One of its most successful models is the Galue, and this 1996 model is a prime example of the breed. It has no apparent needs, and with its underpinnings based on a Nissan model, parts and servicing shouldn’t present a problem. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder T.J. for spotting the Galue listed here on Facebook Marketplace in Nashville, Tennessee. The seller set their price at $20,000 for a classic that you are unlikely to see every day.

Although recognized in its home country as a vehicle manufacturer, Mitsuoka is essentially a coachbuilder that has operated since 1968. It released the Galue in 1996, basing it on the underpinnings of the Nissan Crew mid-size sedan. After removing many of the Nissan panels, the company transformed the Crew into the retro-style Galue, utilizing styling cues from various manufacturers. The front and grille are Bentley-inspired, while the taillights were sourced from a Japanese-spec Cadillac Fleetwood. The wire wheels found on this car were a factory option that further reinforced the car’s luxury leanings. The overall presentation is pretty good, with no major cosmetic shortcomings. The Silver paint hasn’t deteriorated with age, the panels are straight, and there is no evidence of rust. With sparkling chrome and clear glass, this Galue makes a positive first impression.

Mitsuoka didn’t restrict its attention to the Galue’s exterior, adding leather trim and seemingly acres of walnut to create an opulent feel to its interior. It retained all of the donor car’s factory features, including air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power folding mirrors, cruise control, a rear defogger, a leather-wrapped tilt wheel, and an AM/FM radio/cassette player. The Gray upholstered surfaces are in good order, with no sign of wear or other problems. The remaining plastic and carpet tell a similar story, and there is no evidence of UV damage. The seller doesn’t mention any functional issues, suggesting that every feature works as it should.

Below the distinctive body, the 1996 Galue is pure Nissan Crew. Powered by a 2.0-liter RB20E six, shifting duties fall to a four-speed automatic transmission. Power steering is standard fare, as are the anti-lock brakes. The engine is a surprise packet, because while its capacity is quite modest, it delivers a very respectable 130hp and 127 ft/lbs of torque. It may not have muscle car credentials, but cruising at 70mph on the open road while returning fuel consumption figures of around 32 mpg are realistic expectations. The seller claims that this Galue has a genuine 17,025 kilometers (10,500 miles) showing on its odometer, although they supply no information regarding its mechanical health. However, the condition and price suggest that the news should be positive.

Mitsuoka released the Galue in 1996, with the car remaining in production in various forms to the present day. It is believed to be one of the company’s most successful models, although it is shy about releasing exact production figures. Various sources quote totals of around 1,000 vehicles, which sounds plausible for a niche model. This one is a first-year example that presents exceptionally well for its age. It won’t appeal to all tastes, but that is true of almost any classic. However, if you are the sort of person who doesn’t wish to blend into the scenery and wants to stand out at a Cars & Coffee, this Misuoka could be the ideal car for you.

Wow! A kei luxury car! “You washed your Rolls and it shrunk?” Matsuoka should have built an amphibious version of their Viewt. Call it the Niewt, of course. The example here is interesting, and the area where I live seems to be getting a share of JDM imports lately. Many of them are interesting too! Hopefully one of these will turn up.

These aren’t kei-class in size, tho’. The Nissan Crew was a midsize sedan primarily intended and used for taxicab and fleet duty, as with its competitor the Toyota Comfort. Fun fact from the wiki:

“An indication of its intended market as a taxi is that the B-pillar is set 5 cm (2 in) further forward on the passenger (left) side, making the driver’s side door and the left rear door larger than the others since these two would see the majority of use.”

    My name is Galue.
    I thought you were Crew!?
No, I have a new ‘doo.
But you’re still a Nissan too?
    More of a homebrew.
This is too much for me to chew…..

if still working my city office I might ask
for a short chauffeur, sit in back for
the ride in each morning (so
I could stretch out my legs)
    and get some higher
    priority wrk done
    (a big 90 min).
