Rare Sportsgrain Siding: 1968 Chrysler Newport Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The 1968 Chrysler Newport offered some beautiful styling as a 2-door hardtop or a convertible, even in its base form.  However, buyers who chose to add the Sportsgrain siding were treated to an even more prestigious look outside, without having to go with a station wagon to get it.  While this package presented an unusual and unique look, it worked well on the rather large body, with this one here on Craigslist also featuring the ragtop option.  The seller says he’s downsizing, and although it may not be the most ideal time of year for some to consider investing in a droptop, this one might be worth scoring now and waiting until next spring to begin driving it regularly.  This interesting Mopar is located in Littleton, Colorado, and the seller is seeking $12,000.  Mike F., many thanks for the great tip here!

The Sportsgrain was first offered on the Newport in 1968, with a few of the restyled next-generation ’69 models also coming equipped with this faux wood trim.  However, dismally low sales put a damper on its return for 1970.  Production numbers for 1968 included 965 hardtops plus 175 convertibles, making this one quite a rarity.  The seller claims that his is still wearing the original paint, with the finish and sheet metal looking like they are holding up nicely all these decades later.  There’s a little discoloration here and there on the woodie areas, but it’s minor and probably not significant enough to merit much attention yet.

Only a couple of interior photos are provided, but the components inside are all stated as original, except for the under-dash A/C, which is no longer operating.  The owner specifically mentions that the carpeting and seat upholstery are at the point where they could use replacing, but the top canvas is new, and is said to have the factory-correct glass rear window.  Unfortunately, we do not get to see a clear shot of the instrument panel.

Also original is the 383 engine with the 2-barrel carburetor, which was the standard offering for the Newport in 1968.  However, 290 horsepower is probably plenty of power to satisfy most drivers for a convertible of this nature.  The seller believes this car will only increase in value, and I feel pretty good about the asking price of $12k for the overall good condition and options found on this one.  Any thoughts to share about this 1968 Chrysler Newport convertible?

I love these cars. It really shouts 1968, the era where every house had a basement with paneling, just like the sides of this car.

Rarity aside, the asking price is quite good for this Mopar. The build quality was excellent during this era, and the drivetrain is the best. These cars run, drive, and even handle really well. The convertible is icing on the cake, and it’s the perfect time to buy a convertible.

This Newport looks really nice. The interior might need a little attention here and there. But the fact its got all its original sheet metal is fantastic. The woodgrain looks pretty good too. Honestly I’d carefully polish it up and enjoy driving this thing. The 383 with a 2 barrel is more than enough to keep up with traffic. Still have plenty of torque, even without a 4 barrel. The rims look great too here…. And whats that I see??? WHITEWALLS!!! Perfect.. Really nice solid one here. I also love what Rex said. Its absolutely true… In ’68 every basement had wood paneling, I know mine did!!!

The inexplicable vagaries of the marketplace? Mercury and Chrysler both offer “yacht paneling” on hardtops and convertibles.
