Rare Survivor: 1994 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1

It’s amazing how it only takes a relatively small letter-and-number combination to lift a classic from desirable to something genuinely special. Take Chevrolet’s C4 Corvette as a prime example. It has a healthy following, but when you add the ZR-1 badge to the equation, you know you’re dealing with a vehicle that didn’t compromise on performance. This 1994 example is a beauty and is also relatively rare. Only 448 examples rolled off the line during that model year, and this is your chance to park one in your garage. Launched in 1990, the ZR-1 delivered the type of performance many buyers felt should have been standard fare on the C4 Corvette. It also signaled that Detroit was striving to claw back ground lost to tighter emission regulations, when engine power and torque figures fell through the floor. The sticking point for many potential customers was the price, which we will discuss shortly. It also explains why sales volumes dropped dramatically after the first two very successful years. Our featured ZR-1 rolled off the line in 1994, ordered by its first owner in dazzling Torch Red. That shade was popular with Corvette customers overall and was chosen by 119 of the 448 ZR-1 buyers that year. The car’s presentation is extremely tidy for a survivor with 109,000 miles under its belt. The paint shines deeply, and there are no significant cosmetic shortcomings. The trim and glass are in good condition, and the sale includes two sets of ZR-1 wheels. The Black ones currently fitted look aggressive, while the color-matched Red set will look classy and give the car a “complete” look.

Every Corvette produced in 1994 featured a fuel-injected 5.7-liter V8 under the hood. However, the capacity was one of the few characteristics shared between the ZR-1 and the standard Corvette. Chevrolet embraced modern technology with the ZR-1, collaborating with the Lotus Group and Mercury Marine to produce a bespoke engine that developed impressive power and performance. Forsaking the traditional iron engine block, the hand-built LT5 V8 developed for the ZR-1 featured all-aluminum construction, four overhead camshafts, thirty-two valves, and fuel injection. Whereas a “standard” Corvette V8 delivered 300hp and 340 ft/lbs of torque, the LT5 lifted those figures to 405hp and 385 ft/lbs. Was the ZR-1 fast in a straight line? Chevrolet quoted a ¼-mile ET of 12.6 seconds, stating that the car would comfortably exceed 180mph. Therefore, the answer is a resounding “Yes!” Every ZR-1 featured a unique ZF-developed six-speed manual transmission, while the suspension and brakes received similar attention to create a “total” driving package. The seller indicates that this Corvette rolls on new tires and is in excellent mechanical condition. It runs and drives extremely well and is a turnkey proposition.

The ZR-1 package wasn’t merely about performance; Chevrolet loaded the interior with creature comforts designed to make life on the road extremely comfortable. Buyers received leather trim, climate-controlled air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise control, a digital gauge cluster, and a premium Delco Bose stereo with both a cassette and CD player, pumping out 200 watts of music you could feel. This Corvette’s dazzling Red interior looks great, with only minor wear on the driver’s seat outer bolster. The remaining leather is seemingly perfect, and there’s no evidence of abuse or deteriorating plastic. It isn’t pristine, but the presentation is easily acceptable for a survivor-grade vehicle of this vintage.

The 1994 Corvette ZR-1 probably would have sold in greater numbers if it wasn’t so expensive. The package cost buyers $31,258, increasing the Coupe’s purchase price by an eye-watering 86%. That placed it beyond the financial reach of many, but you could drive away in this exceptionally tidy survivor for significantly less.
