One lesson I have learned is that project builds can sometimes develop a life of their own. Costs can quickly spiral out of control, and you only begin to realize this when you tally up the invoices. Such is the case with this 1963 Pontiac Catalina Convertible. It presents beautifully, features an iconic V8 under the hood, and is a turnkey proposition for its new owner. With summer now on our doorstep, it provides the ideal opportunity for some relaxed top-down touring. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder T.J. for spotting the Catalina listed here on Craigslist in Bluff City, Tennessee. The seller set their price at $25,995 OBO, and considering they hold receipts for recent work totaling over $26,000, it looks like a potential bargain.

Pontiac released a new Catalina for the 1961 model year, featuring a dramatically restyled look reflecting evolving buyer tastes. Further upgrades during the following two years further enhanced the appearance, and this Convertible rolled off the line in 1963. I’ve discussed the “wow” factor in previous articles, but when you combine Grenadier Red paint, a contrasting White power top, and sparkling eight-lug wheels, this Catalina is a winner. Finding anything worth criticizing seems impossible, though one image suggests the top has developed a slightly “dirty” look. However, that may be an optical illusion, because it looks fine in another listing shot. The panels are as straight as an arrow, and the seller’s use of the word “solid” appears to indicate that there are no rust issues. The glass is clear, and the trim looks excellent.

Powering this Catalina is its numbers-matching 389ci V8. It sends its power to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. With power assistance for the steering and brakes, the driver’s life would be pretty relaxed behind the wheel of this classic. The seller indicates that they recently rebuilt the transmission and replaced the brakes. They don’t specify where they spent the rest of their claimed $26,000, but they provide a folder full of receipts that will enlighten the buyer. The deal also includes the Build Sheet and a selection of dealer literature. Potential buyers can consider the Catalina a turnkey proposition with a genuine 83,000 miles on the clock.

Classic Convertibles can pose a unique challenge; It is almost impossible to hide a sub-standard interior with the top lowered. The buyer faces no such problems with this Catalina, because it looks stunning. There is no significant upholstery or carpet wear, and the bright components retain a winning shine. The dash and pad are excellent, seemingly justifying the seller’s use of the word “perfect.” The wheel looks classy with its translucent sections, adding to the luxurious feel of this classic. There are no aftermarket additions, and the AM/FM radio will provide relaxing tunes on the move.

Sparkling paint, laser-straight panels, a spotless interior, and a healthy V8 under the hood. What is not to like about this 1963 Pontiac Catalina Convertible? It seems to tick most of the critical boxes for a turnkey classic. Needing nothing but someone to hand over their cash and to point the Pontiac towards the horizon. There is nothing about this gem that would embarrass the buyer, and I won’t be surprised if it finds a new home fairly quickly. Could it be yours?
