Restoration or Rod? 1934 Chevrolet 3-Window Coupe

This 1934 Chevrolet 3-Window Coupe has been off the road since 1962. It is believed that it has spent some time sitting outside, so it is going to need a full restoration. You will find it listed for sale here on eBay. Located in Loveland, Colorado, it is being offered for sale with a clear title. The owner has set a BIN price of $20,000, but there is also the option available to make an offer. A big thanks goes out to Barn Finder Ikey H for locating this one for us.

These 3-Window Coupes are great looking cars, and this one is no exception. The seller states that it is 98% complete, so I’m hoping that he means that there are some important components like the missing glass stored in the car. What does appear to be evident is that in spite of expectations for a car that has apparently spent time sitting out in the weather, this Coupe looks to be remarkably solid. There is no rust to speak of, and the seller does state that there is no rot in the car. The timber is also apparently solid, and all five wire wheels are present, along with the wheel caps.

Under the hood is the 181ci 6-cylinder engine. There is no word on its condition, but given how well the rest of the car has survived under the circumstances, it is possible that this may also be able to be salvaged. The transmission should be a 3-speed manual, but we have no information on that. There is also no mention of the interior trim, and no photos either. I think that it’s probably safe to assume that if the car has been sitting out in the weather with no windows, then you will be working with a blank canvas there.

I am a great fan of seeing older cars undergo a full restoration, but I have no problems at all imagining this car becoming a hot rod project for someone. The body style lends itself to that sort of project, and 3-Window Coupes usually come up a treat after such a build. Would you restore this one, or would it be the base for a rod project?

Think the seller has it confused with a ford for the asking price. Good luck either way, great Rod material.

A friend of mine bought a body only from a vintage car club as nobody wanted to restore it as it was too far gone. He told the owners that he wanted to rod it and there were no objections. This pic is what he did with it. I’m a purist but what this fellow did with the original wreck is outstandingly beautiful in my eyes.

The red coupe looks nice except for the Ford front fenders.

Once again the wishing price doesn’t match reality.

I would suggest that the photos, and sequence thereof, are as follows. First picture, we’ve (ahem, flipper) put it on the trailer in front of the barn where we (ahem, flipper) found it. Second picture, on the road back to home base. Fourth picture, we’re (ahem, flipper) back home in California with our new prize, ready to be flipped.

** the repeated mention of the word flipper is in no means to be considered as a derogatory term. Who knows, after I retire to New Mexico, I might be haunting the back roads myself.

Update: I may have the above sequence backwards. Ebay has ship from address as Loveland, CO. Perhaps picked up in California (or points south)? And moved to a barn in/near Loveland, CO?

Also, I can’t get a clear look at the tow vehicle’s plate, and am no expert on state license plates, but that plate reminds me of Arizona plates?

As with most old projects the cost to restore or rod it usually exceeds its final value. Would this be worth more as a rod? It seems you could find a nice rod under $40K, it might not be the way you would build it but it is usable right away. Or you could spend 10’s of thousands building it your way, and have the fun experience, but you would have to wait a few years before you could drive it. If it is possible to get it running maybe fix the brakes and putt around for a while deciding what to do with it. I would look into a 60 something 300” straight 6 cylinder & tranny if the original 6 is past the point of rebuild. Just dreaming but it would be hard for me to justify spending more than 6 or 8K for this old girl

There is only 2 groups of engines for an open cowl hotrod… that’s the 348/409 Chevy and the Chrysler Hemi, any model. Everything else has the same basic valve covers…. boring!

I think a few of you should have your vision checked. Also, what is an open cowl Hot Rod? Would that be that it doesn’t have a hood. The cowl is the piece between the firewall and the windshield

I think that what is being ment if I may is that the hood is on with no side covers. A misunderstanding of terms. As you are correct in saying that the cowl I the part between the firewall and the windshield.
