Rolling Project: 1966 Pontiac GTO

The Pontiac GTO took the market by storm in 1964 and led to a whole array of mid-size competitors that would dominate the rest of the decade. Originally an option on the Tempest/LeMans, the GTO (“Gas, Tires & Oil”) become its own series in 1966, the year the seller’s edition was built. That period would prove to be a record one as production numbers came close to 100,000 units. Of those, about 10,000 copies were the pillared coupe like the seller’s auto which is in Mansfield, Texas, and – as a roller – is available here on eBay where there is a reserve to be met north of the current bid of $3,400.

Along with its intermediate cousins, the GTO got a facelift in 1966 which included a tunnel-back roof treatment that resembled that of the Dodge Charger of a couple of years later. Two versions of a 389 cubic inch V8 would be offered, a single 4-barrel carburetor rated at 335 hp or a Tri-Power set-up at 360 hp (in its last year). The seller doesn’t mention which one used to be in this car, but it’s gone as well as its companion transmission (said to have been an automatic).

While the red/orange paint on this car has run its course, we’re told the body itself is in “great shape”. The glass is good, but items like the bumpers are missing as is much of the interior. The trunk no doubt has issues as the seller is providing a new trunk pan to further the project. Other than the transmission, the only option this car has that the seller mentions is the tile steering wheel.

As we often see here on Barn Finds, this seller has too many projects to get around to restoring this car. But if it doesn’t move, he/she will keep it and try to get around to fixing it up – eventually. Is anyone interested in lightening the seller’s load?

    Think about it. These cars have been collectible since the mid to late 70s and this heap is still unrestored more than 40 years later. Odd.

      Tony, in the first paragraph it mentions the car is listed (and in red letters it says) “here on eBay” if you click on “here on eBay” it will take you to the auction.

    Later steering column with an ignition interlock. Manual shifter brake pedal but no clutch pedal or linkage. Homemade engine mounts. Inches-thick Bondo on the nose panel. Missing zillions of exterior, interior, and drivetrain pieces. No photos showing chassis metal, VIN tag, trim tag, or “wrong” trunk. Seller with an attitude: “If you don’t like the price keep your comments to yourself.”.

    Not even a good parts car.

    Just no at any price.

    A horrendous piece of iron. Fire up the EZ press and put it out of its misery. In all fairness no matter how much you like these and I do, this car “to me” is a rode hard and hung up wet hack. Start with that steering column circus and envision the MIT engineer that wired that mess. Then after the tour of the rest of the waste land, just buy a nice one. Nothing here but an option less, hacked up, rusted, busted, bashed figment of what it once was. Nothing to see here folks….move along…

    This should not even be here. Someone used this as a parts car and now wants to sell what he no longer has need of. The steering column is one thing and no clutch pedal or maybe brake pedal is missing on what looks like a manual transmission. Someone cut up the dash.
    Do you have $80,000 to waste on this?
    $50 is more like it if the tires are good.
    I am a devote GM man but this only makes me shake my head and say “My god. What in the world……”

        Could possibly do it for less. It’s already awful, so a cheap driveline swap is guilt free.

    I don’t know the price but I think it would be worth a closer look to see with my own eyes the true condition of the body if I liked what I saw I would buy it if the price was right and go from there.

    It will take at least 50k to do a nice job IF you can find some good quality parts,I finished my 65 about 5 years ago and I have over 80k in it, now I want to sell it
    And I know I will lose my butt.
