Rolling Shell: 1964 Plymouth Barracuda

We all know this one, it’s a 1964 Plymouth Barracuda and it’s in Bayonne, New Jersey. This “rolling shell” is listed on eBay with a current bid price of just over $700! You’ll need to bring your A-game for this one, or at least your B-game, if there is such a thing..

The Barracuda started out as an option package for the A-Body Plymouth Valiant in 1964. This particular car needs a fair amount of bodywork, mainly welding in new patch panels for rusted out areas. Luckily, if you’re not into bending your own metal, there are patch panels available.

The interior looks fairly good, doesn’t it? At least there aren’t any huge holes in the floor and the dash doesn’t look horribly cracked. You’d want to put in new carpets anyway, and luckily they’re available. The door panels look pretty good and hopefully they can be cleaned up. Seat covers and foam are available to spruce up that otherwise decent interior. I love seeing that 4-speed in there!

It looks like they were trying to diagnose why this engine was “stuck”, but they must have given up and it’s now out of the car. Or, maybe they took it out to rebuild it. In either case, it’s a 273 V8 and 90% of Barracuda owners in 1964 checked the box for the V8 engine over the 225 slant-six. I could go either way on that one. The 273 V8 was good for about a 13-second 0-60 time, much slower than any of our 4-cylinder cars that we own now. But, a V8 is usually preferred just like a manual transmission is usually preferred, and this one has both. Hopefully you can rebuild the original engine to keep this car “original”. This looks like a good project, lots of parts are available; just don’t break that rear window! How would you power this car, by rebuilding the original 273 or would you go for more power?

    The 273 can be made into a great eng I would keep it if possible and do a little work to bring it up to a screamer

    I Had a few of those, still have a 65 Formula s.. that had a Valiant grille though.. Nice who knew prices would go crazy! 20 years ago you couldnt give them away! I paid $900..

    if I were doing a restoration on this car my first stop for it would be a glass shop to remove the front and rear windows. There would be less risk of breaking the glass if done by people that know what they’re doing. The fab work doesn’t look that bad should be easy enough to do. Followed by body and paint work. These cars IMHO were ugly ducklings but they have grown on me. I wouldn’t call them beautiful swans, but they are cool. I too would keep the original engine/ trans. And have them rebuilt.

    Nice for the money and a 4 speed car – to bad it’s not closer – looking for one 64/65 with a four speed hump…..anyone have an “S” they want to sell – Victor ?

    The 1964 has unique trim like the “Valiant” name on the tail panel and the Barracuda on the fenders is longer – looks like they are missing – correct dash and 4 speed plate which is usually missing…

    mmmm always loved these but although our country did get the sedan built as a local car we never got these exciting looking fastbacks. The front end looks very close to ours though often our Aussie versions of US cars [valiants and ford falcons] have odd differences in front end designs.

    as an aside: What has me even more excited is the immaculate looking sailboard on the wall [looks a 340 but could it be only a 320 comparing it to the car length..]…

    Any other poleys on here who can identify it for me, dont remember seeing those arrow graffics over here…it looks probably early 90’s as it is still using US fin box system as I see no fin attaching holes thru board and too modern looking for late 80’s..

    So is Bayonne a windsurfers spot? He is a sailer like me who doesnt use foot straps [old school style] or board looks unused hence no footstraps]. other poleys on here.

    Man I’d offer on both if it was local…hee hee

    This is a double barn find for me.
