Rust-Free 4×4: 1989 Toyota 5-Speed Pickup

How many of you have owned a vehicle for over 35 years? Better yet, one that you bought new? That’s the case with this 1989 Toyota 4×4 Pickup that was bought new by the seller, or at least they have it listed as a one-owner truck. You can find it posted here on craigslist, south of Chandler, Arizona, and they’re asking $14,500. Here is the original listing, and thanks to T.J. for the tip!

One of the best craigslist ads in a long time, this seller provides nice overall photos, including two engine photos and detailed photos, and also a VIN. Well done! Bought new in Scottsdale, AZ, and having lived its whole life in Payson, Arizona, this truck is said to be rust-free and was owned by an “elderly” person and never taken off the road. Those huge wheels would surely be up to the task. I love the look of the single cab with standard bed, it gives this truck almost a cartoon-like appearance, especially with those huge wheels.

Toyota’s fifth-generation Pickup, which is what they were known as here – Hilux in some other markets – was made from 1988 through 1997. We only got the two-door pickups here in North America, but there was an Xtracab model, similar to what some companies referred to as a SuperCab or Club Cab, with extra space behind the front seats. The only places we don’t get to see on this truck are inside the bed and the underside. I’m assuming both are in nice shape, given the condition of the rest of the truck.

Ok, one more area we don’t get to see, and that’s what the original seat fabric looks like. This front bench seat is wearing a cover, as you can see, and other than the dirty carpet, it looks great inside. Although there is a dash pad, and there are some cracks visible on the detailed interior photos, so be prepared for that. The AC is cold, by the way, so that’s good news.

The clean engine compartment houses a Toyota 22R-E, a fuel-injected 2.4-liter SOHC inline-four with 113 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. This one has been rebuilt 3,000 miles ago (the truck has 117,000 on it) and runs great. Power is sent through a transfer case and five-speed manual to all four wheels as needed. This looks like a nice example, with a couple of dings here and there and a couple of dash cracks. Is $14,500 a good price for this one-owner 4×4?

    4 cylinder 5 speed 4WD???? I’M IN!!!!
Great looking Toyota pickup. The only thing thats a little off are the oversized tires. I’d go back to a stock size ( unless I’m wrong and they are). If they’re larger its a bigger strain on the 4 cylinder, plus makes the overal gearing higher which you really don’t want with a truck, especiallya 4 cyl. Looks like a nice honest Truck here.

I’m 100% right there with you, sir. Those wheels are way too big for me, visually. They look cool, but then again, I’m all about a more stock look, so maybe they could be sold to pay for a “normal” (ha) set of tires and rims/wheels.

Agreed, I’d put steel 15′ wheels and 30×9.50 tires and your done here. Perfect little 4×4. Rather have the inline 4 than the 3.0 V6 too.

You hit the nail on the head Stan. Steelies with 30X9.5, perhaps, maybe 31X10.5, but honestly I think your idea is better. Scotty, couldn’t agree more about “normal ” sized rims and tires.

I love love love this truck; perfect spec but with smaller wheels. But what does the barn finds hive mind think about the price? Seems steep to me, but I could see paying 75% of the price. No way you see them in this condition any longer, and with low ish miles

I’ve got 31×10.5×15 on my ’99 Tacoma and they are perfect. That’s the factory size for mine. Would love to have this truck!

I had a ’79 model (late’ 80s), with the same setup and a topper. I moved my girlfriend and kid, plus a 110-pound Doberman, from South Florida to LA via WI. Lost the main driveshaft in Nevada, engaged the 4WD, and ran off the short front one to LA. These are indestructible!

Traded my .88 4runner 4 cyl for a .89 V6 wanting more power for my trapline here in the mountains of Wyo .,,,got the power but uses alot more gas no surprise there but I would’nt sell it till it drops 305,000 and still going strong but the rust is a pain

    Why would a 22RE need a “rebuild” at 114K?

Wonder why the engine was “rebuilt” at 114k miles? Seems pretty low.Elderly driver…what happened? What did “rebuilt” involve?

Bought one of these new in 1995. Still driving it, almost daily. I have needed to repair NOTHING on this truck in thirty years!

This is a nice looking truck, a few dings here and there but it’s one I wouldn’t worry about taking into the AZ back country. I had an ’80 4×4 with the 20R and they typically don’t need a rebuilt at 114k though so I sent the seller a list of questions, that being one of them. Interestingly I bought a new white ’89 Xtra Cab 4×4 with the V6 in Scottsdale a couple of months after my wife and I moved to east Mesa and I put 31×10.5 BFG All Terrains on it for our occasional back country trips, so this old definitely girl piques my interest, hand cranking windows and all.
