Rusty Project: 1977 Chevrolet Camaro LT

The Type LT stood for “Luxury Touring” and became a model of the Chevrolet Camaro in 1974. What that meant was that the level of trim and personal comfort was greater than in a standard Camaro. Largely unchanged in 1977, the Camaro finally outsold the Ford Mustang for the first time. The seller’s ‘77 Camaro LT looks like a yard find that the seller has been able to get to start, but not much more. Located in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, this rusty project is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $3,000. Another tip brought to us by “Lothar… of the Hill People”.

In 1977, Chevrolet’s Camaro was pretty much the same car it had been to since the second generation was introduced in mid-1970. And it would keep the same body shell through the 1981 model year. The big news for ’77 was the return of the Z28, though it was more show than go thanks to the engine detuning of the era. The 350 cubic inch V8 (2-barrel) was still available in the Camaro, but the best it could do without being a Z28 was 170 hp. That appears to be the engine in the seller’s car that he/she has been tinkering with.

We don’t know the background of this Chevrolet or how it arrived in its current state. Rust is a big issue, not only with the sheet metal (which has holes), but also with the undercarriage. The seller tries to show us what we’re dealing with, but putting the car up on a lift before sealing the deal wouldn’t be a bad idea. If you bought this car for a restoration, you’re going to have your work cut out for you.

The interior seems pretty decent, and a matching half-vinyl top appears to cover the roof. With a new radiator and distributor, the 350 V8 at least idles, but one tire is flat, so it’s not ready to roll. We’re told the car is complete, so searching for parts may not be a problem. Chevy produced nearly 73,000 of these LTs in 1977, so they were everywhere in their glory year of beating out the Mustang (which had been downsized with a 4-banger in 1974).

I’ll give this seller credit. He’s not asking an arm and a leg and he has taken quite a few pictures showing the cancer that is eating this thing up. Looks like a lot of work, but I’ve seen far worse on here going for far more. And the 350 is a plus. It was an interesting color combination…. black with a tan half vinyl roof and a tan interior. It would look really sharp if kept this way after restoration.
