By the mid-1970s, the Chrysler duo of Plymouth’s Valiant and Dodge’s Dart were getting tired. So, Chrysler developed an all-new car in 1976, the Volare/Aspen (Plymouth/Dodge). Though there was a lot of hype about the new machines, they ended up being a disappointment for Chrysler (a flood of recalls came early on). After just one generation, the pair retired in 1980, giving way to the company’s new front-wheel-drive marvels. Located in Farmingdale, Maine, the seller offers this 1980 Volare (he/she refers to it as a “Sport” but we’re unsure why as it’s not a Road Runner). This malaise-era Mopar is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $7,500.
Even though the rear-wheel drive Volare and Aspen were on the way out, Chrysler refreshed the styling a bit in the final model year (1980). Part of this was accomplished by using the fenders, hood, and front bumper from the Dodge Diplomat (which was a 4-door sedan popular for fleet use). Only two engine choices were available, the 225 CI Slant-Six (as in the seller’s car) and the 318 V8 (in either 2 or 4-barrel setups). The Volare outsold the Aspen that year by a wide margin, 90,000 vs. 67,000 units.
The seller needs cash and/or is willing to trade for something that he/she can quickly turn into cash. We’re told this Plymouth is clean and runs fine at 89,000 miles. The 6-banger is paired with a TorqueFlite automatic transmission, a common combination. It has air conditioning, though the seller doesn’t indicate how cold it blows. Rust isn’t a problem, perhaps because the vehicle stayed indoors when not in use. I suppose this Mopar would make an okay daily driver, but the seller doesn’t provide a lot of pics to help confirm this assumption.
Memories of the hockey 🏒 stick wing on Julian’s 🥃ride.
I think it’s not that he needs cash, but is “looking for cash mostly”, he’s also willing to entertain trades that he can sell.
It’s overpriced, especially when you consider the quality of the ad and time on the market, so far, 6 weeks and counting. Cars without a strong following are price dependent and need to have better ads if they want to sell in a timely manner.

🎶 Volare, woh oh! Volare. No no no no🎵
I would be curious to know if this vehicle still has the “ASBESTOS HEAT SHIELD” that was installed by the Factory between the engine block and the carburetor? Those3 are not Road Runner Stripes from the factory/ Might be some model the Dealer dreamed up
The seller needs to stay out of “That Isle” at Pep boys on there next car. But, most car guys have been down that isle and picked up something at one point in our lives. Mine was the Thrush muffler cherry bomb for that fat sound and did little to nothing to improve performance. But it sounded cool, or at least to my 17 year old ears. Ahh, good times!
It doesn’t say that it’s a Road Runner because it’s not. It’s a “Volare Sport” because of all of the hideous doo-dads that he’s slapped on it. It’s really just a garden variety slant six/automatic Volare coupe that’s not worth anywhere close to $7,500.

He even managed to put the “hood scoops” on the wrong sides. Looks like it’s jonesing for a fat line of coke! And some sap’s gonna have to fix those holes in the trunk. Yeah, the PepBoys customization didn’t do any favors.
The wing is on backwards too!
That car wants desperately to be cool but is still relegated to the nerd table in the lunch room.
That 11 year-old is trying to get money for a new Xbox, TV, whiz-bang laptop, and mobile from Gramps’ old Volare.
I desperately needed a car back in the early 80s, and I was given a lead on one for a good deal because they owner couldn’t drive any more. It was a ’79, had the wrong R/F fender emblem on it (Aspen) with a small dent just behind the bumper.
I can’t recall what I paid, either $1200.00 or $2200.00, but in either case, it did have a 225, A/C like a cold storage facility, and the paint was good. Bench seat was uncomfortable at best, but it only had 22,000 miles on it. It was a decent car, if only a Grandma grocery-getter coupe.
$7500.00 is way overpriced for that, especially as clowned up as it is.
