Small-Block Project: 1972 Plymouth Duster 340

Plymouth introduced a fastback version of its Valiant compact, the Duster. It was a popular seller between 1970 and 1976. The Duster 340 was the performance version in 1970-73 (replaced by the Duster 360). Rated at 275 horsepower, these machines were peppy due to their light weight. The seller has a ’72 edition that needs restoring and may come with two 340 engines. Located in a garage in Moore, Oklahoma, this Mopar project can be yours for $5,500 OBO here on Facebook Marketplace. Barn Finder “Zappenduster” did the homework for this tip!

The 340 cubic inch small block was a hot commodity in Chrysler products between 1968 and 1973. Nearly 217,000 installations took place in cars like the Duster 340, Dodge Demon 340, Plymouth Road Runner, and more. 42,000 units were assembled in 1972 alone, with almost 16,000 of those bestowed upon the Duster. We’re not sure if the seller’s car is a real Duster 340 or a Duster that has had a 340 added to it.

Details regarding this ’72 Duster are sketchy. We assume it doesn’t run and has been out of commission for a while. We’re told it has an automatic transmission, but the floor shifter looks like a stick shift to me. If that’s the case, is this really a 3-speed or 4-speed manual car? The seller says the original motor is out of the vehicle, so unless the photos were taken before the extraction, are the two 340 included with the sale?

The body may be okay, though we see a couple of dents. The white paint was once offset by a vinyl roof covering, but that has been since partially removed. The interior is a mystery of sorts due to the cover over the front bench seat, but the back seat looks okay. So maybe the interior will pass, at least for now. If you’re looking for a Duster 340 to restore, does this one get your motor running?
