The Galaxie nameplate debuted in 1959 as the top trim version of the Ford Fairlane. It was another marketing ploy by the automobile industry to tie into the Space Race of the 1950s and 1960s. The Galaxie would be a Ford staple through 1974, competing directly with the Chevrolet Impala. This 1959 Town Sedan is a one-owner car with low miles and one repaint. Needing just a little TLC, it’s offered here on Facebook Marketplace by a dealer in Youngstown, Ohio, for $6,950.

Ford’s full-size cars got a major facelift in 1959, competing with an all-new design over at Chevy. Large round taillights dominated the rear of the car, a styling cue that Ford would use for the next decade (later rectangular). The Galaxie quickly outsold the Custom and Fairlane entries as the public liked the higher level of trim offered. More than 183,000 copies of the Galaxie Town Sedan (Ford speak for 4-door sedan) were produced in 1959.

The seller’s ’59 Ford is in nice, mostly original shape, though it’s not perfect. The Surf Blue paint was reapplied at some point, as you can see overspray on the door jambs. The interior is well-worn, reflecting that the materials were installed 67 years ago. Prior to the selling dealer, we’re told this is a documented one-owner machine with only 47,000 miles to its credit. A 292 cubic inch V8 resides under the hood, backed up by a Cruise-O-Matic transmission.

We’re also advised the old Ford runs and drives great. The only immediate miss might be that the front bumper is bent, but we assume finding a replacement won’t be too difficult. The Galaxie wears a fair amount of exterior chrome, which was typical of the 1950s, but at least they didn’t get carried away with it like Buick did in 1958. If you’re looking for a vintage car you can venture around in right away, does the number of doors turn you off? Kudos to T.J. for another tip from yesteryear.

$6950? What’s not to love! It’s original, decent shape, and driveable! OK so it’s a pillared sedan–big deal. For someone entering our hobby or finally buying their first collector car this isn’t a bad place to start! There are interior kits avail. that match the Galaxie patterns, and carpet shouldn’t be a problem either. This is a car you can drive and enjoy. Work on the little things as you find time. FOR ONCE I DO happen to have $6950, but darn it! Property taxes will be due in July! I nice dream that nearly could’ve been done!! GLWTA!
