The 1963 Corvette Split Window Coupe is undoubtedly the most coveted variant of the entire C2 generation, but it didn’t start out that way, as safety concerns about rear visibility led to the back glass becoming a one-piece unit the following year. From a collectible and desirability standpoint, it’s fortunate that stylist Bill Mitchell got his way and that the dual-glass Corvette coupe stayed in production for the entire ’63 run. Located in Missoula, Montana, this example here on eBay is a work in progress, but it seems to offer more positives than negatives. The current bid of $60,100 falls short of the reserve here.
Some of the 1963 cars were modified almost immediately, with the pillar removed and a single pane of glass installed in the rear. Fortunately, this one remains as it left the factory, and the seller thinks it could easily be a dream daily driver or a great base to turn into a showpiece. It’s been under the same ownership since 2005 and was used on the weekends in Southern California until 2016, when the seller moved to Montana and stopped driving it. The body prep has begun, with all stock panels in place except for the hood, and the fiberglass seems well on its way to becoming ready for a respray. Many of the removed parts are present, along with a few new pieces, and all appear to be properly labeled for the future owner.
Although it was available with different horsepower ratings, all 1963 Corvettes came with a 327 engine, and that’s what’s included here. Unfortunately, it’s not the factory component and is said to be from the late sixties. A few upgrades have been added, such as an Edelbrock manifold, a Holley 650 carburetor, and Hooker headers, with the exhaust exiting through side pipes. The transmission isn’t original either, with a new Tremec TKO600 now in place, and it’s good that it includes overdrive, since the rear end contains 4.10 gears!
The interior is described as in good driver condition, with no rips or significant wear reported, although a new carpet will be included in the sale. Sadly, the seller is experiencing health issues that are preventing him from continuing this project, but it looks like he’s left things in a good place for someone else to pick up. Listing says that shifter doesn’t go with the car anyway, so you won’t have to worry about it.
The seller is only keeping the knob (T-handle). There are slight differences in T-handles and shift knobs throughout the years, some people are on the lookout for a specific style. There is one that I keep an eye out for and buy every time is see one, there are dealers in used shifter parts that routinely get $300-$500 depending on condition even though Hurst sells a similar one that most people would assume has no differences for about $80.

I have to say I think it’s probably about at the top end here already at 60+. Now fools and their money can be easily parted, but I suppose if it’s your lifelong dream to have one, it’s in pretty good shape to get it across the finish line.
Will pogo for over $100k. Friend has a shop and he does a bunch of splits. $100k all day long.
Cool car. It is a well thought out project that was clearly done by someone knowledgeable and meant as a keeper.

Nice Mike! It may seem a little steep depending where it ends up. IMHO if you’ve always wanted a split window and have the funds, this could be a good project with some desirable original parts. Props to the seller for a really good and what seems to be an honest listing.
These cars draw crazy money and the only downside on this example is non matching numbers. I’m betting someone pays up for this very cool split window.
So without the original engine and transmission and with various add ones, can this car still fetch $60,000+? I will assume that a Completely Original 1963 Corvette might, but…

With Corvette reso-mods bring so much money this might be a very good buy for someone who can afford the project.

If you watch the Bring a Trailer auctions you know that a ‘63 SWC body shell, no interior, no chassis, no drivetrain can sell for $75k as long as there is a useable title to go with it. High end resto-mods are selling for $300-700k and they don’t use much of the original car other than the body shell.
Thanks, Ron. That was about where I expected it to be. My brother ran a body shop and back in the early 90s he billed an owner that kept a black 63 in the shop for a year and half or more before he finally got on the stick and finished it. I kept up with it when I stopped by and brother called one day and said it was just about finished, (their part of the job was just part of the restoration) and come by and see it. It turned out beautiful. The shop billed the owner over $80k for just what they did. ( a frame off working that I can’t remember all of, but there was undercarriage damage from collision. A frame straightening and extensive suspension and alignment work plus the bodywork and painting plus the year and a half of storage). The owner loved it and gave them an extra thousand and had it towed out on a roll back for upholstery, more electricals, and some more engine work. My brother was happy to see it gone. They constantly had to move it around to work on other cars but it all worked out. It went a long time between getting work done on it and just sitting waiting for the owner to decide on what he wanted to be done next. Brother held him to the storage charges and kept reminding the owner that the clock was ticking. Buried under sanding dust from other work going on.

Why does one skinny piece of fiberglass make this car’s “value” so much higher than a ’64’s? Can you think of other cars that way?
In the 60s you could buy a plexiglass rear window to eliminate the skinny piece of fiberglass. So can you add a skinny piece of fiberglass to the 64s through 67s?
Interesting project. $64k seems to me about as much as this will go for this split window without its original drivetrain. With all the suspension parts that come with the car it seems like the car was destined to be a restomod or possible a competition machine. Interesting headers, just be sure no one gets in or out without long pants.
63 coupes fetch more money than the 435 frenzy that began in 1988, when Motor Trend put a red 67 on the cover with giant $100,000 numbers. So after nearly 40 years, 435s, average ones with restamped blocks sell for about $125,000 to $150,000. Real, legit no excuse examples bring $200,000 and up. 63s lagged far behind 67s but now there is 63 SWC mania. I.like this car because you can DRIVE it and not worry about bugs splattering your date coded windshield. The numbers game has gotten beyond absurd. Life is short. Drive, do not let it sit in your garage. Mice will eventually get to it. This car here will never be a Top Flight or Bloomington Gold car. So what.
