Square Body Limo: 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The popularity of the classic Jeep Grand Wagoneer is well documented, especially as the ultimate accessory at a cottage parked near a beach. It’s become a status symbol of sorts, much like vintage Ford Broncos and Toyota FJs. Still, there’s always pressure to outdo the neighbors at the country club, so why not step up your game and find a stretch limo conversion of this iconic 4×4? And yes, the four wheel drive still works. The seller claims he drove this one back from Colorado and that he is dead-set on his price of $19,999. Find it here on craigslist on Boston’s North Shore.

Limo conversions are always curious to me, in terms of whether they actually drum up significant business for a livery company that isn’t satisfied with the standard Town Car model. Certainly, you still see this done today with regards to Hummers and Chrysler 300s that are stretched further than the original manufacturer ever intended. Nowadays, when you find a vintage model that was subjected to this treatment in the 1980s or earlier, they’re a bit jarring to see. Over the years, we’ve seen bastardized versions of the Maserati Biturbo, Porsche 911, and numerous Mercedes S-Class sedans turned into stretch jobs, but this is the first time I can recall seeing a Grand Wagoneer.

As you’d expect in a Grand Wagoneer, the luxury appointments are generous. And really, it has survived in very nice condition. The seller mentions that a company in Colorado specialized in stretching the Grand Wagoneer and that only a handful were built when it was new. I’d believe that, as this is a model we usually only see in its standard length, preserved in showroom condition. It’s not entirely surprising that a company in snow country chose to build a limousine with actual off-road capabilities, but I doubt anyone intended the Grand Wagoneer to go anywhere other than where a few inches of snow had fallen on the ground; still, this would likely be a showstopper at the next Jeep Jamboree.

The interior appears to retain factory seating, as the upholstery pattern is what you’d find in a standard issue Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Same goes for the wood trim and carpets, all of which look to be in fine shape. The seller proclaims that it runs “very great”, which isn’t exactly the most helpful description for assessing a vehicle’s running condition, but these were generally reliable machines when maintained. The bigger concern tends to be rust, and I don’t see any alarming body issues to write home about – of course, there’s just one picture of the exterior to help with that determination. Is $20K a fair price for such an unusual specimen, or is it a bit lofty for an oddball like this?

….Everything was fine until you got to parallel parking….badampump!

This would be popular here in Nashville at the “barn” weddings.

It’s certainly no red barchetta, but you’d be in the limelight of your subdivision with this no doubt. Hit the gas and watch time stand still

The conversions on these aren’t the best, like most any limo, they ALL had functioning 4×4 too. I used to work on this one when it was new. Interesting piece, has been a rental since new.
