Stalled Restoration: 1970 Plymouth GTX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Plymouth introduced the GTX in 1967 as a premium mid-size muscle car. It was joined by the budget-conscious Road Runner in 1968. The GTX was a series of its own for five years, disappearing after 1971 except as a trim option on the RR. This 1970 GTX is one of just 7,748 built that year and is a project that has been in storage for more than three decades. Some work has been done, but much more remains. The car comes with a lot of spare parts, sometimes two of everything small.

The GTX was potent right out of the gate with a 375 hp, 440 cubic inch V8 as standard equipment. The one in the seller’s car is said to be numbers matching and is paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. This car also came with the Super Trac Pak option which added front disc brakes, 4.10 gears, a heavy-duty suspension, and a beefier cooling system. The odometer is said to read 60,000 miles, so that must be when it when taken off the road in the 1990s and some disassembly began.

According to the cowl tag, this Mopar was painted in Light Gold Metallic paint (FY4) when it was built. It also had a black vinyl top. Somewhere along the way, a color change had to have been made as you see evidence of the “Hi-Impact” color In Violet in all sorts of places (known as Plum Crazy over at Dodge). The original interior matched the rest of the original car, but that’s hard to tell now since the passenger compartment is loaded with stuff.

We’re told the machine is complete for the buyer to continue forward with a restoration. In some cases, multiples of mechanical parts and trim pieces can be found. If you don’t mind a Humpty Dumpty kind of project, this one is in Torrington, Connecticut, and is available here on eBay where the current bid is $18,900. Of course, the reserve is unmet. Will you be the one to give this muscle car a second life?

Gold to graple to off white. I’d say this is on the way to its fourth life.

The eBay auction is over with a high bid of $19K and the reserve not met. When you figure what it will take to make a good restored car out of this, even if the labor is your own, that is probably close to full value in my opinion. A lot of work hours will be needed to bring it to completion.

IDK. Current Haggerty values are between $50k (good) and $60k (excellent) for a ’70 GTX with a 4bbl and 4speed. The Super Trac Pack and matching numbers drivetrain will also increase value if you can find the right buyer. The key is convincing the seller he wants to get it out of his garage bad enough to sell it to you for the right price!
