Still Beautiful: 1950 Jaguar XK120 Project

Even covered with dust and incomplete, Sir William Lyon’s beautiful XK120 shape makes me gasp at it’s beauty. This 1950 XK120 is being sold here on eBay as an unfinished project due to unfortunate health issues belaboring the former owner. Bidding has reached $14,100 as I write but has not met the reserve. The car and it’s accompanying parts are awaiting you in Saint Simons Island, Georgia.

Based on the appearance of the body shell, the car was on it’s way to being restored to a high standard when the project was halted. We’re told that the body and chassis have been “completed” and are in “great condition.” I don’t see anything in the pictures to tell me otherwise, but of course further inspection, in person if possible, is encouraged.

Some parts have gone missing — the seller tells us you will have to source the door locking mechanisms, spare tire, transmission tunnel cover and both bumpers.

In my limited Jaguar experience it’s quite unusual to not see any rust in the inner sills. Of course, the floor boards are just that — boards — but even they look good.

There’s an extensive hoard of parts to be replaced or refurbished; for example, the grille looks quite bent but is at least present. The car was originally Pastel Blue with a blue interior and Gunmetal top (hood), so when you are fantasizing about the car being completed (doesn’t everyone do that when looking at a disassembled car?) you’ll know what it looked like originally.

According to the seller the engine was rebuilt about six years ago. I hope it’s been stored correctly since!

As you can see from the above documentation, the car was originally delivered in Scotland and was one of only around 250 XK120s sold in the UK that year — the big push was exporting cars, mainly to the US. I’m sure there’s an interesting story about how it got to the USA. So would you like to finish this project?

Yes it is beautiful , Funny how such an Iconic British design is based heavily on a German design .

I’ll bet he’s thinking of the BMW Veritas. I can see some slight similarities, mainly in the number of road wheels, headlights and doors, but would say it’s a bit of a stretch.

Having seen both in person, I prefer the 120.
