Stored 30 Years: 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Project

Chevrolet’s Camaro would be the first serious threat to the Ford Mustang’s dominance in the “pony car” market. In the car’s first three years (1967-69), more than three-quarters of a million copies of the Camaro would leave the assembly line. That includes this 1968 edition that has been stored for 30 years. It’s a solid project car that has a strong engine, though not in the vehicle. Located in Redding, California, this second-year Camaro is available here on craigslist for $16,500. Our thanks to Tony Primo for his continued diligence in the tips department!

After a successful launch in 1967, the Camaro was little changed in its second outing. The most visible was the absence of vent windows in the doors and the addition of side marker lights fore and aft (another new government mandate). Sales increased slightly to more than 235,000 units. From the cowl tag, this Camaro wore Butternut Yellow paint from the factory, but matte black seems to be there now.

The seller says the vehicle is practically rust-free, with spots in the rear passenger footwells and a lower portion of the dashboard. The interior seems to be original and in good condition from the photos. This Chevy had factory air conditioning from the get-go, but we don’t know if that hardware has survived into 2024.

We’re told a running 355 (350?) small block is along for the ride, complete with an upgraded camshaft. When you reinstall it, you can also hook up the TH-350 transmission which is said to work well. The odometer reading is 35,000, but we’d guess the possibility exists it could have turned over. If you don’t mind picking up where someone else has left off, perhaps this Camaro is a good project.

Certainly a better project than the Mustang above. Having included the running gear in the sale makes the whole package worthwhile.

Redding is a dry area with very low humidity. Cars tend to survive, though they get sun baked if left outside. If the description in the ad is accurate, this will be a good project, rust on the top of the dash from leaking windows is common, same with spots on the floor, if that’s the extent this car makes more sense than a cheaper car that spent time dealing with road salt needing extensive rust repair and panel replacement. One way or another, buyers pay up, either at the time of purchase or through the purchase of new metal and the time/labor to fix it. This car will cut the time significantly allowing a the buyer to enjoy the car much sooner.

The ad has been deleted by its author. Not surprising it sold.

Interesting that the car has a console for an automatic, and the optional guage cluster, and a clutch pedal. This might be a good project.
