Stored 42 Years: 1-Of-825 1972 AMC AMX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The first generation of the American Motors AMX from 1968 to 1970 is somewhat iconic today as a 2-seat GT-style muscle car. But lukewarm sales led to the AMX becoming a performance edition of the 4-seat Javelin “pony car” from 1971 to 1974. The seller’s 1972 version has AMC’s largest powerplant, a 401 cubic inch V8, but it’s been out of circulation since 1983. Located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, the seller’s asking price here on craigslist seems to be $30,000, though the listing isn’t clear. Credit for this tip goes to Barn Finder “Curvette.”

Demand for the AMX didn’t break any records with sales of fewer than 20,000 units in its first three outings. Things didn’t improve when the AMX became a fancy Javelin, and just 3,220 copies were consumed in 1972. Of them, only 825 came with the top-end 401 V8, so if this is the original engine in the seller’s car, it would be a rare find today. Unlike the Javelin, all AMXs came with eight cylinders.

We don’t know the history of this automobile except that it’s only had one owner, the odometer reads 50,000 miles, and it hasn’t been on the road for 42 years (why?). Besides an automatic transmission, it also has the “Go Package,” which usually came with different performance goodies from year to year. We’re told the AMX wears Plum Crazy paint, but that was a Chrysler color. Could the car have been repainted in Mopar hues, or is the seller simply confused?

Does the car run? We don’t know. What does it need? We don’t know that, either, because of a lack of photos and details. $30,000 may be the seller’s asking price (USD or CDN?), but we’re told that he/she will entertain “fair” trades or offers. As cool as this car seems, it deserves a much better sales pitch.

It has wheel rollers on rear in garage plus driveway.

    So high confidence non running.

In Canada with the forms to apply to enter US. Done that recently..

Same comments we all state.. explain why parked… more pics, bottle feed to start using gravity.

If trans is issue state reason

I drove a orange 401 manual back in the day.. it was a blast and big M50s on cragars (1978)

Those were the days of cheap muscle power..

Good luck on sale as a cool car to start with.. depending on price..

It’s not Plum Crazy, it’s Wild Plum. That’s the name AMC gave this color.

For me…a distinction without a difference…but to the AMC cognoscenti, this would be a JAVELIN AMX (’71-’74). “Real” AMXs have only two seats.
    There. I said it.
