“Strato” Bucket Seats! 1967 Chevrolet Caprice

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet went uptown with the addition of the Caprice in 1965 as Chevy challenged Ford’s new luxurious Galaxie 500 LTD. The idea of a plush family car appealed to buyers and the Caprice was promoted to series status in 1966. A refresh of the styling would occur in 1967, the year of the seller’s car. While we’re told this Caprice runs well, it looks like it’s been left outside for quite some time, flat tires, and all. Located in Port Orange, Florida, the car is available here on craigslist for $6,900. And we send our thanks to Barn Finder Nate for the tip!

Unlike the Biscayne/Bel Air/Impala, the Caprice only came with a V8 engine, any of the ones that Chevrolet built. So, while a 427 cubic inch motor was possible, the 396 V8 was not overlooked and is said to be the powerplant in the seller’s car. A couple of versions were available, so the conservative estimate is this engine produced 325 horses when new. Unique to the Caprice, at least through 1967, was it had a formal roofline while the Impala’s was a fastback. That changed in ’68 when the Impala could be ordered that way but called the Impala Custom.

The Caprice continued to be a winner in 1967 with total production reaching 124,500 units. This would be the last year before hideaway headlights could be purchased as an $82 option. The seller’s car has seen its share of the world with 175,000 miles reported. Since we’re told that this car runs, perhaps its cosmetic appearance is where time and money will have to be invested.

There’s not much good left of the silver paint and black vinyl roof. A lot of mildew looks to be present on the back half of the car, so a thorough detailing will be needed just to see how many issues there are. The seller admits that rust is present but calls it fixable. There’s a big chunk of it in one of the doors and the hood has several pockmarks on it. The interior looks surprisingly good with the optional bucket seats and console. But the headliner is falling so that will have to be replaced. If this car didn’t have a 396 V8, would it be overlooked for restoration?

That trunk lid should buff right out.

Good one 370pp Buff off? The actual trunk lid ? Or the paint? Me thinks buffing would go right through to the ground

Actually for the price with that engine and the interior it’s a pretty good buy

Did somebody drop acid on the hood? And as for the rust on the door, I don’t think there’s a lot of rocker under it either. It’s a shame because I like this car a lot.

Bird droppings that aren’t removed can cause this kind of damage on a car that is ‘stored’ out in the elements for decades. It can be extremely acidic and once the protective top coat has oxidized it can allow moisture to seep through primer coat and be trapped between paint and metal for years

        Ah yes, that makes sense.

When I got back to the states in ’74 I bought a 67 Caprice 283 2brl 3 on the tree with overdrive and bucket seats with console. I’ve never seen another one equipped like it. Drove it for many years and wish I still had it
