Stretch Limo Déjà Vu: 1980 Pontiac Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Pontiac Trans Am was one of the most popular cars in the late 1970s thanks to the visibility of the automobile in the 1977 Burt Reynolds/Jackie Gleason “good ole boys” flick, Smokey and the Bandit. Someone decided this 1980 T/A would be great turned into a stretch limousine. We don’t know why, how, or when the transformation took place, and at least two of them were built. The car is in Edmonton, Alberta, where it’s being offered for at least the second time here on Kijiji.ca for $68,000 (CDN) + GST. Check it out from long ago here on Barn Finds.

Not much has changed since we ran across this unusual limo five years ago (May 2020), and the ante has grown by $10,000. We understand this thing was produced around the turn of the century, when it was already two decades old at the time. The seller, who has a second one that they may keep, reminds us that to duplicate this work today could set you back $150,000. Though Trams Am sales had dropped by more than half from 1979 to 1980, there were more than 50,000 of these things in circulation in ‘80.

This highly modified ‘Bird seems to have everything you might want to cruise around in style. That includes dual T-Tops and seating for six, with four facing each other on the ride. These cars weren’t as fast as they once were by 1980, with two engine choices in the 300 cubic inch range provided by either Pontiac or Chevrolet. An automatic transmission was your only option.

The seller says this “Frankenbird” has 95,000 kilometers on the clock – but that hasn’t changed in five years. That suggests the unusual vehicle hasn’t moved (photos show it in the same spot), which is not good on parts and components that need to get exercise. As was the case in 2020, what would you do with it if you took the plunge?

I made a fairly quick and probably very flexible Trans Am Sedan recently, for some odd reason.

Now that 4 door hardtop just works Scotty!! I like that better than this one. Of course like you said, there may be a little body flex in the turns. But you nailed the proportions.

That’s pretty good Scotty just to be fooling around.

Seems like the ’80s and early ’90s were the Wild West for stretch limo conversions. Sports cars, ’57 Chevys, VW bugs, all were ripe for cutting in half and shoving a few more feet of car into the middle of. Good luck getting commercial insurance to use any of them as party limos today.

Don’t forget the stretch limo Pacer in ‘Wayne’s World 2’.

The only plunge I’d take with this hideous thing is off the nearest cliff tall enough to destroy it. EWWWWWWWWWW! Get it?

Wow. Too cool for school. I’d love to be driven to my next class reunion in this. Who cares if the public approves? You’re going to have the only one. I’m most impressed that it survived.
