Stunning Interior: No Reserve 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

I find it fascinating that while some enthusiasts will gladly tackle major rust repairs or mechanical rebuilds on project vehicles, a surprising number find the prospect of an interior retrim daunting. That is slightly sad because there are few feelings more satisfying than to step back to admire an interior that you have brought back from the brink in a home workshop. The new owner won’t face that challenge with this 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, because the interior restoration has left that aspect of this classic presenting superbly. It features a tidy exterior and no apparent rust. The Jeep has attracted eleven bids since the seller listed it here on eBay in University Place, Washington. That action has pushed the price to $8,100 in a No Reserve auction.

If we ignore the interior refresh, it would be fair to classify this 1988 Grand Wagoneer as a genuine survivor. Its Burgundy paint and faux woodgrain are claimed to be original, with no history of restoration or repairs. That makes its presentation noteworthy because venturing into the wilderness can typically result in significant paint or panel damage. This gem’s exterior has a few bumps and bruises, and there are minor chips and scratches. However, if considered purely as a driver-grade classic, it needs little unless the winning bidder craves perfection. The faux woodgrain has deteriorated due to UV exposure, which is almost unavoidable. Sourcing the correct replacement material should be possible, although many vinyl wrap companies should be able to supply and apply something that closely matches the original for a fraction of the price. Another slice of positive news reveals itself when we delve below the surface because this Jeep is rust-free. The seller supplies a comprehensive image gallery revealing no existing or developing issues with the floors or frame. The trim and wheels are in good condition, and the glass looks excellent for its age.

If this Grand Wagoneer has a highlight, its interior scores that honor. The seller indicates that it recently received a complete retrim using factory upholstery throughout. There is no wear visible, and no marks or other defects. The carpet looks perfect, protected by matching mats that were a wise investment. The only weak points are the missing knob from the tilt lever and the deteriorating wheel. Finding a knob for a few dollars shouldn’t be difficult, and I had no trouble locating a flawless wheel for under $120. Therefore, adding the finishing touches won’t break the bank. The only visible aftermarket addition to an interior featuring air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power seats, a tilt wheel, and cruise control, is a modern CD stereo. If you are going to head out to commune with Mother Nature, this jeep will allow you to do so in total comfort.

Jeep adopted a one-size-fits-all approach to the 1988 Grand Wagoneer’s mechanical specifications. Buyers received a 360ci V8, a three-speed automatic transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and power-assisted steering and brakes. There is probably no vehicle that better demonstrated the impact of tighter emission regulations than this, with its engine producing a very modest 144hp and 280 ft/lbs of torque. However, with the engine’s torque peaking below 1,500rpm, these vehicles could climb over relatively harsh terrain with the motor barely ticking over. The seller indicates that this Grand Wagoneer has 174,000 miles on the clock, but that they hold documentation confirming that they have recently invested over $15,000 on work that extends beyond the interior retrim. The results justify the spend, with this classic in perfect working order. It runs and drives beautifully, and the four-wheel-drive system works as it should.

There is a lot to like about this 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, especially for those wishing to venture off-road in the lap of luxury. It could be a prime candidate for a light cosmetic refresh, and replacing the wheel would lift the interior to a virtually flawless state. This gem has generated plenty of interest since hitting the market, as demonstrated by the bidding tally and other listing statistics. If you have ever owned one of these classics, would you consider a repeat performance by joining the bidding party to become this Jeep’s new owner? I would like to wish you luck if you do.

The Grand Wagoneer is the Only Jeep that I would consider owning. Classic styling and luxury. Perfect cross between a station wagon and LAND YACHT. At the price listed, it would SEEM to be a Bon Marche. What’s UP with that 🤔. These usually go for much higher prices. As previously mentioned, a buyer should do a careful inspection. BTW these are far better than today’s Bloated SUVS at BLOATED prices, 👍

Too many miles on the odometer. Looks good but a complete mechanical inspection should be done before deciding to purchase.

Better looking and more reliable than a new Grand Wagoneer with that awful twin turbo Hurricane engine. Oh yeah, they cost $115,000 too.

Agreed since I work at a Jeep dealership and have been a auto tech since 1993!!! The newGrand wagoneer is way overpriced and we still have about 1/2 dozen 2023’s still sitting on the lot with there batteries having been changed al ready. The hurricane engine has had many t-stat problems and other electrical problems. Same with the newer Grand Cherokees. Don’t even ask about anything with the 4xe set up!!!

A number of years ago ai owned a 1984 model that e changed out to Chevy big block running gear I loved that thing , Then divorce took it away, I’m nit very fond of the 360 engine but at the price even doing a rebuild would be a god real.

Go to the eBay site where they’re selling it. It has a lot more photos of it. The undercarriage is in great shape and looks more pristine than most current vehicles on the road. — Other that the steering wheel needing a nice leather wheel wrap, the rest of the interior is in excellent shape. I have no idea what all the talk about redoing the interior is all about – go the site and look at – it looks like it never had a kid in it at any time. — The going bid is over $11K at the moment and this rig appears to be worth every penny and much more so. If it wasn’t so far away, I’d be in on the bidding.

This is my favorite body style. You know they are expecting big $$$ because they vacuumed “stripes” in carpets! lol Looks like they did a new wool wax spray underneath. Take a REAL close look for rust.
