Suicide Door Survivor: 1937 Plymouth P4 Deluxe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

There’s something unbelievably appealing about an all-original car that’s still wearing its original paint. Especially when it’s as old as this 1937 Plymouth P4 Deluxe is. This great looking car can be found here on eBay in York, Nebraska, a milestone stop for me as I travel west across I-80 in Nebraska. The current bid price is just under $5,400 and there is no reserve. Thanks to Ikey H. for sending in this tip!

1937 is when Plymouth started offering light trucks and the company was really on the ball with some very nice vehicles. Our own Adam Clarke showed us a 1937 Plymouth P4 Deluxe sedan a little over a year ago here on Barn Finds and that one had a buy-it-now price of $5,900. The blue example appears to be quite a bit nicer for around the same price, but there are still 3 days left on the auction.

An interesting note on the 1937 Plymouth P4s, they had a one-inch shorter wheelbase but were one inch longer overall than the previous year’s cars did. I guess that isn’t that interesting, but even back then, designers wanted the car to look bigger and “plumper”, pretty much like car companies are doing still to this day. The trunk sure looks small, doesn’t it? Here’s what it looks like inside.

The interior looks great, if this is actually all original as the seller says, it’s amazing. The ’37 Plymouth P4s gained a bit more foot room because of a new hypoid rear axle so the driveshaft hump went down compared to previous cars. The seats look like they’re in excellent condition both front and rear. To say that the wood grain dash is beautiful is an understatement. The 3-speed floor shifter worked through helical-cut gears for a smooth shifting operation.

The engine is Plymouth’s 201 cubic-inch flathead-six with a little over 80 horsepower. The seller says that it runs like a top. It was recently stored for six years and was just given new tires, brake hoses and brakes, a rebuilt generator and distributor, and more. Are there any fans of these early Plymouths out there?

Wow! You just don’t find them like this anymore. I would put this in a similar category to my ’49 Chevy for originality; a few badges but it’s definitely worth keeping it mostly as is. I would sure be tempted to bring this one to my place. And the price is reasonable. A good cleaning, detailing and polishing, then a whole lot of fun driving it. I wouldn’t change anything except to remove that spinner from the steering wheel!!! Maintain it and drive it…

Geo, I totally agree with you and Dave: keep it original, clean it, maintain it, and drive it.

I couldn’t resist it, I would have to put new glass in and seat belts as well.

I spent much of my high school years riding as a passenger in one of these, along with 7 others on many occasions. Pre seat belt times, it had plenty of torque to take this passenger load up hill. Reliable but was owned by the engineer father of my friend and was kept up. It was 20 years old at the time, too.

The closing statement of the author “are there any fans of these early Plymouths out there”? That must be the stupidest comment of all time.

Thanks, Duaney, that was darn nice of you to take the time to throw that negative comment out there. As if I didn’t think that 2020 could get any worse.

Don’t any of you EVEN think of customizing this time capsule! Take it to a hot rod show and you’ll probably get more looks than the rows of billet festooned, metallic painted, soon to be dated interior, autometer gauged customs.

Well I bought the Edsel wagon on e bay a few weeks ago you had features and the owner of the car totally flaked our on me. He would not get back to me for payment and after a week and a half told me the engine was no good and all kind of excuses. I told him I’ll still take the car and to this day he still so t finish his no reserve auction to me. What did EBay say when I tried to get their assistance….we can’t force him to complete his sale to you. Sooooo long story short. I give up with the Edsel. I am currently bidding on this 1937 Plymouth so hopefully this one might come through. If I end up with it I think a major cleaning and scrub down is in order and keep it original as possible. Something to be said about something a little older than me and looking in better shape LOL. We will see how this one goes😀

Chalk it up to an omen, Murray. As frustrating, as it was, it may have saved you a lot of agrivation.

      I’m trying to recall.
Were you the one who also purchased a ’59 or ’60 Olds red/white wagon, that was being delivered, not long ago?

Red and white 59 Edsel wagon. But it never got delivered as I mentioned the seller just flaked out on me. You are probably right. If I went through this much grief and didn’t even get the car imagine if they took my money and then what???

Had a 37 business coupe for alot of years. VERY nice car. Sold it, got stolen from the next guy, I found it for him, got it back for him, no thanks I might add.He had let it go to crap sitting outside. Friend ended up buying it to mod it I guess. Engine is now stuck and whole car is a rusty mess. I don’t want to see it again. I just look at the only picture I have left of it and remember the good old days when it was a great driver.

I went to $14151. It’s $1600 to ship to California. Couldn’t see going much more. I spoke with the seller who was extremely nice and someone who went out to his house to see it had a proxy bid of just over $18000 on it. They are the ones who got it. I just got to keep looking for something cool. Bought a 7000 mile 1979 Camaro from a Barn find posting a few years ago. The Edsel would have been nice and this Dodge. Oh well. Something will come along again.

Murray, so you missed it by $100. You’ll find something here in no time.

As I recall, don’t you live in Valley Village?

What a guy would have to pay to even casually straighten out a few bumps, put a new different interior in, let alone do any mechanical stuff, this is a deal at twice the price… and originalClay

Auction is over and it sold at $14,251.00 This old Plymouth is a unicorn, and brought a unicorn’s price. And only about 60 miles away instead of half-way across the country. My top bid was $8420 and I could have gone higher, but probably not high enough to win.
I hope the winning bidder follows through with the sale.

I bid $14151 on it but they had a proxy bid of over $18000. I am sure the buyer will follow through. Thought I would get it for sure at $14k. Oh well

The proxy bid was over $18000 so I would have had to be higher than that to get the car. I am in Roseville, California
