It’s amazing how wild and varied the enthusiast car community is. While we think we have seen every kind of collector, a car comes along that reminds you how obsession can run in many different directions. The seller of this 1985 Citroen 2CV “Dolly” has gone to some serious lengths to create what is likely one of the best versions of this car in the states. Not only that, but it comes with a killer Besco “suitcase” trailer and a ridiculous electric 2CV scooter. Find it here on craigslist for $30,000 or best offer.

The “Dolly” in the name refers to the two-tone paint job. When these 2CVs were offered, this trim was marketed towards women. I’m assuming this has something to do with the fairer sex liking fancier paint jobs? Whatever the intent, it was a successful offering, and this particular example has clearly been loved by its caretakers. The current owner has obviously continued that tradition, and mentions that when he got his hands on it, he sent it straightaway to Dave Burnham’s Citroen shop in N.Y. and told him to do whatever was necessary to bring it up to speed.

For a short while, I owned a Peugeot 505 wagon. It was a charming car. While I generally have an appetite for challenging projects, the 505 was just a bridge too far. There were a handful of specialists who would actually work on it, and they weren’t local to me. While anything is possible when it comes to old cars, I just didn’t have the desire to make a challenging more of an uphill battle due to the scarcity of spares and people who could work on it. The seller is part of a select crowd of enthusiasts that love these cars so much, they will do whatever is necessary to keep it on the road.

The seller has driven this 2CV despite its rarity and irreplaceable body panels, racking up numerous awards at a wide variety of car shows. He lists off the following: 2019 Carlisle Elite Trophy; Carlisle Citroen 100 Anniversary – Best 2CV; New England Citroen Club/Canadian Club; “Rendezvous” East Coast show -Best 2CV; and so on. The Citroen has also been the subject of magazine features, which further ensures it will be impossible to blend into the crowd in a car like this. Have you ever seen this two-tone 2CV in the flesh?

Maybe the Dolly name is the acknowledgement of 400lbs of passengers in a 300lb car…

Winning “Best CV at a car show”
Makes one wonder exactly how many were in attendance…

I actually saw this one and the odd scooter at this year’s Citroen Rendezvous car show in Ballston Lake ny. I prefer the deep red and black Charleston version though.

While serving in Germany in 1971 there was one car that we were forbidden to own was the Citroën. The inexpensive model that looked like a trash can on wheels. 😃

The body panels are not irreplaceable. You can buy almost everything for this car. You can buy new fenders, doors, hoods, deck lids, even a new chassis. All it takes is money.

You can also buy all the parts to build yourself a new bodyshell; in fact I think that new LHD shells might be available. Mine’s RHD, and is getting new metal from the toe-board back and then up to part-way up the rear quarterlights.

About time I got on with that…

2 years ago I stayed with a friend in the town of Bouzigues France and he had one of these. It was a blast to drive! I slowed down for a speed bump and he says “What are ya doin’ this is a Deux Chevaux you CAN’T kill THIS suspension”!! One of my Classic Car memories I will never forget..
