Superbird Clone: 1970 Plymouth Road Runner

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In 1970, Chrysler offered two aerodynamically designed cars for action on NASCAR’s superspeedways. These were the Dodge Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird. The latter was based on the mid-size Road Runner and used a unique front nose and tall rear wing. This seller’s car is a ’70 Road Runner, partially transformed into a Superbird tribute, but much work remains. Located in a storage facility in Clinton, Ontario, this interesting project is available here on craigslist for $5,500 – and is a tip from Tony Primo!

Only 1,935 Superbirds were built in 1970 for public consumption. Since the car wasn’t the huge success on the track that Plymouth had hoped for, it quickly passed into the history books. 458 copies had a 440 cubic inch V8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor and a 4-speed manual transmission, and it looks like the seller was going for # 459 here. We don’t know how this Road Runner began life, but it may have had the Hi-Impact color Sublime from the beginning. The car is a roller now.

We’re told that all of the Superbird parts here or waiting to be installed are original and legit. And the nose and wing are likely the most valuable pieces. The waiting engine and tranny are not numbers-matching. New parts include the radiator, dashboard, wiring harness, and some of the interior pieces. Real Superbirds fetch big bucks, but the market value for tributes is lower, but maybe more than what an ordinary Road Runner would fetch.

    A reasonably priced Mopar :O it’s a Festivus miracle!!!!

Love your “Seinfeld” Festivus ref. Love it! This is NOT a clone. It is a tribute car, a replica. How many of you watched BJ Scottsdale Jan. 2025? ‘Twas the year of the replica. I lost count – but I’d guesstimate there were at least 100 x “replicas” auctioned. Craig and Steve would stop bidding and scold the audience: “Gentlemen, this is the ‘real deal’…a replica…”. A hoot! This project is a good “tribute” car for a modest person with limited $ to finish and enjoy. For less than $50K completed, this car is more practical than a $1.4M trailer queen.

I was equally (un)impressed by the shear number of “Tributes” and “Restomods” going for super high dollars, while the originals went for much less.

It’s all about the glitz and showbiz with these new builds. But, like the 100 thousand dollar chopper craze, there will be a reckoning someday.

And I’m thinking that a plain jane 70 RR is going for more than that, plenty more even in that shape…

    Russ,
The Charger Daytona was produced in 1969. The Superbird was produced the following year in 1970.

What are you talking about? The Charger Daytona is a 1969 Charger daytona. They were not sold as a 1970 model. The Superbird is a 1970 model thats it.

NickP is correct, the Dodge Daytona is a 1969 model, the Plymouth Superbird a 1970

Google says 69 for the superbird, it was released to the public on 70.

Duke, what I am confused by is that the Superbirds were all released with the 1970 quarter panels, tail light panel, and 1970 Coronet front fenders, as well as a cut 1970 Coronet hood, and a locking steering column. Are you saying that Chrysler started production and sales of these components six months before the models for which they were designed were released? I have never heard of tail or side lights from a Superbird with SAE numbers from 1969, which would have been required for a production 1969 model. A friend owned a Superbird, so I had a few years around the car as well as around the parts to put one together. Is it possible that the documentation represents pre-production models? I believe that you have papers, however, maybe they represent something other than production editions made for dealer sales?

What is being confused here is production date versus model year. Chrysler, Ford and Gm all would start to produce vehicles about 5-6 months prior to the calendar year change. An example of this would be that the manufacturer would start in about July or August of 1968 making the new 1969 model vehicles. Remember that back in the day the next years models would start showing up at the dealerships in September.

Scotty, I did not write that! Someone must have hijacked my account. I just changed my password. Hope that stops it. If not, someone has cloned my account in order to stir the pot.

In continuing with the theme of this car, I guess I should be flattered that someone went through all of the trouble to create a “Tribute” or a “Restomod” of me.

      LMAO!

I KNEW IT!! That didn’t sound like you PRA4SNW. I had the same exact thing happen to me. First they had my picture, but a different name, and then they had my name as well and posted a comment and used wording I would never use here.( Just like what happened to you) I tried to change my picture on my account, I looked and the picture immediately changed on theirs as well ( the one with a different name) So I changed it back and theirs changed back as well. I did what you did changed my password. Hopefully it gets cleared up.

      Thanks, Driveinstile.

This site allows multiple people to have the same Username, so it’s easy to steal a picture and mimic someone else. But in this case, those posts have “Member” next to them, so it seems like a member would have had to have done it.

Either that, or someone hijacked one of my computers or my password. But, honestly, why waste the time? Just to post that nonsense? It really wasn’t that funny.

Driveinstile: It sounds like someone has figured out how to clone accounts and then use them whenever they want. And those cloned accounts are tied into the original account so when we make a change, their account reflects the change.

Hopefully changing the password locks them out.

When I used to run an on-line fan forum like this, you constantly have to keep the software updated because so many loopholes are discovered and abused.

Hi Jesse. I found all the emails. I owe you an apology, you’ve been trying to get in touch all day, the emails wound up in a Promotion folder and I didnt see them ( my wife erased them no knowing what they were, not her fault).
Thank you again for helping me out all day. You guys are terrific!!!

Hey Jesse, Thanks for changing the settings.

Impersonating someone else is such an immature thing to do. And based on the juvenile comments, that’s who we are dealing with here.

I did get 2 emails on Sunday evening, 7 minutes apart, regarding confirming a password change request that I supposedly made. Good way to do it – a user must follow an emailed link in order to change the password.

@Jesse: It looks like someone has also changed/added to my subscription preferences.

I usually just get the daily email, but I got an email last night (same time that the password changing emails came in) about a single car. At the bottom, it said this:
“You received this email because you’re subscribed to instant alerts (Swedish).”

I haven’t done anything to change it. Let’s see what happens.

The winged cars were quite successful. So much that NASCAR penalized them out of competition. In their final iteration, the Superbird and Daytona were relegated to MoPar small blocks.

As is gone, was that right? $5,500 for everything????? Wow, I would slap it together and make it drivable then fix the body as you go. The nose and wing must’ve cost a bit.
