Supercharged Chevy 350! 1968 Pontiac Firebird Project

Sometimes we’ll run across a car here at Barn Finds like this 1968 Pontiac Firebird here on eBay that doesn’t give a very lengthy or detailed description in the ad posting, then scroll through the photos and find something totally unexpected, which in this case happens to be under the hood.  If you’ve been in the market for a first-generation F-Body to take on as a project, this one might be worth considering, and the car seems reasonably priced at $12,750.  It’s another offering from Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles, California, and can also be spotted here on their website, but unfortunately, there’s no additional information.

Let’s go ahead and get the surprise out of the way, which isn’t totally shocking as the ad copy does say there is a 350 Chevy engine in the bay, however, I wasn’t expecting to see that supercharger on top!  Surprisingly, not a word is spoken about the condition of the motor or if it’s even running at the moment, but I’m not spotting much missing in the bay so little has been borrowed from the small block.

Also mentioned is an automatic transmission, with nothing further stated regarding its functionality either, but we do get some photos of the Firebird up on a lift and can see there’s a complete drivetrain intact, we just don’t know what’s working or what needs attention.  The car is said to have just been moved from the dry desert state of Nevada, and everything we get to view down below seems reasonably solid.

No specifics regarding the body are given, so we’ll have to let the photos tell the story here.  Some patina can be seen on the roof and trunk, but that’s a fiberglass hood with sort of an odd fit on the driver’s side or perhaps that’s the front fender, or maybe both.  It appears like the body has a few hard knocks and some corrosion in the lower quarters, but with some massaging many of the panels appear salvageable and the sheet metal doesn’t seem like it’s at all that bad of a starting point overall, although it would be nice to be able to see under that rocker trim.  These also just might be the lowest-hanging tailpipes I’ve ever seen on an F-Body.

At some point, somebody spent considerable time on the interior, but it looks like all the custom touches were done a long time ago and it’s going to need a lot more TLC inside, plus the driver’s seat appears like the springs are sagging.  There’s also quite a wiring mess under the dash, so that’ll definitely need to be straightened out sooner rather than later.  This one’s going to need some work both inside and out, with the engine and transmission both a mystery, but I’m guessing the Firebird will find a new place to call home fairly quickly.  Considering all the unknowns, is $12,750 reasonable for what you’re seeing here?

I sure hope the previous owner didn’t pay an exhaust shop for those LX Mustang wanna be tailpipes. Those blowers are old school, engine management is lacking to truly make some power. Poncho engine is gone, drop an LS with a modern power belt driven blower, modern tranny and the clean up the car and have fun. Someone building a T bucket will give you good money for the engine and accessories in there now.

Great minds think alike. Came to say that exact comment about the Mustang LX tailpipes. Good Lord, those are hideous, on that car.

It looks like a TH400 oil pan, maybe because of the extra power the blower is developing. If that combination works well I see no need to change it, but this bird needs help all over.

If you can beat the dealer down a bit on the price, it looks like a nice project.

Virtually everything that BHCC has for sale is beat down… and their write-ups are comically horrible. This ad mentions that the car has a glove box! Pretty important fact about the car many are not aware of!

I don’t have first hand knowledge about the Beverly Hills Car Club, proceed with caution

I suggest that anyone interested get photos of the VIN and trim tags before making an offer.

I can see it has a trim tag on the firewall, but I can’t read it. The VIN listed in the ad reads like a state-issued number.

Speaking of Mustangs and surprises under the hood. My bone stock LX 1989 almost lost a roll on hwy race, with an early 70s chevy half ton 2wd… wait..towing a ski boat ! !🛥 😲
Saw him later at the lake, he had a wildly built 350, Turbo 400 automatic, gears, and a screaming exhaust.

This would make a great poncho project if you have original Pontiac driveline, first order of business, fixing those wheelbarrow exhaust tips imho.

    I had a 68 Firebird and put a 350 and trans from a wrecked 69. Called it a Cambirdo

How do you put it in gear? I don’t see a shifter on on the column or anything between the seats. Maybe I’m blind… seriously, am I missing something?

There’s a column shifter; the end is pointed right at the camera. You can also see the indicator on top of the column. But, you have to look close.

Exhaust system from the collectors back with X pipe for me, some might prefer an H pipe. Other items need attention obviously as well.
