Supercharged Super Truck: 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS

The seller calls this 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS one of the quickest and most fun trucks that they’ve ever driven. I don’t doubt that at all when they go on to mention that it has around 485 horsepower! This beautiful black boosted beast can be found listed here on eBay in Alpharetta, Georgia. The current bid price is $23,000 but the reserve isn’t met yet.

The Chevrolet 454 SS was a breed of muscle truck that included the Ford SVT Lightning and the late-comer Dodge SRT-10. The 454 SS beat them all to the punch, having been made for the 1990 through 1993 model years and the 1990 trucks were all black. White and red would be options for 1992 and 1993. The Ford Lightning – not the new EV version – came out in 1992 for the 1993 model year and the Dodge SRT-10 came out a decade later for the 2004 model year. This truck has just been repainted, wet-sanded, and buffed and it really looks great.

A lot of sources list the first muscle truck as the Dodge Custom Sports Special which came out decades earlier, in 1964, and had a 426 Hemi engine. Talk about a collector truck today, yowsa. Speaking of collector trucks and yowsa, this 454 SS appears to be in outstanding condition, although it has been modified which may or may not hurt its value for a collector of original-spec vehicles. This one has been lowered two inches and sadly we don’t see a profile photo of it to get the full effect.

The interior looks great in a late-80s/early-90s velour sort of way. These trucks were all automatics and the seller says that this one has been swapped for a 4L80 transmission and it also has had a huge list of upgrades so you’ll have to read the seller’s description to see everything that has been done to this truck. One thing that’s easy to see is the brand new bedliner.

Under the hood is where a lot of the magic happens on any of the Chevy 454 SS pickups, this one in particular. The engine is a 454 cubic-inch V8 and the seller talks about the ProCharger supercharger which helps it go from what would have been about 230 horsepower and now it has over double that, which is rarely a bad thing. They give a figure of 485 horsepower which has to be amazing and this whole truck looks amazing. Any thoughts on this supercharged super truck?

The blower is just what the 454SS trucks needed. Nice set up on this one.

Nice looking pickup, I remember these when they came out a buddy of mine who owned a spray plane bought one, he was very much into the NEW BEST things, he owned the first TURBINE spray plane in the eastern half of ND, it was a beautiful plane! OK back to this pickup, I think ProChargers have come an incredible distance over the years and are a completely legitimate alternative to a roots type blower, about the same price per boost levels. My question is how do you hook this HP to the road? Do you install a complicated traction management system? Ladder bars are not going to work. Tub the box and put different bigger tires under it? Or is it just to say you have it and just drive it?

I would luv to drive it, or at least a ride in it. Seller has another pick-up listed also.

I loved driving this truck!! I was lucky enough to work at a drywall yard that bought a NEW SS454. It was not that fast at all but the prolonged time I would let the pressure build-up in first gear. AND “boy-o-boy” it would bounce the rear end off the ground about a foot. It impressed me because the only other stock truck/ factory unmodified was my E-350 1998 V-10 6.8L that would jump off the ground and as hitting the pavement leave a 10-12 foot posi patch from my BFs 315/50/15s had a dana 80 3.73. I miss both!!

485 HP through a factory 2bbl TBI unit? No way. It can’t come close to flowing enough. Even reworked, those TBI’s top out at 350hp.
