Supernatural Project: 1967 Chevrolet Impala Hardtop

Tributes to star cars from films and TV shows are nothing new, and we’ve seen quite a few over the years at Barn Finds. However, this 1967 Chevrolet Impala 4-Door Hardtop offers one of the more unusual possibilities. The seller floats the idea of recreating “Baby” from the TV series “Supernatural.” It is a viable option if the buyer decides to abandon the idea of a faithful restoration. The seller has listed the Impala here on eBay in Lake in the Hills, Illinois. They set their BIN at $14,500 OBO.

After its 1965 release, Chevrolet refreshed its Fourth Generation Impala in 1967, emphasizing its Coke-bottle styling. It continued to offer six body styles, with our featured car’s first owner selecting the 4-Door Hardtop variant. It looks pretty sad today, and there is evidence of a prior restoration. The existing Sky Blue paint cladding its panels isn’t original, with a few more isolated areas revealing what appears to be Nantucket Blue. The fact that the existing paint is flaking away will probably prompt the new owner to strip the panels to bare metal. There is plenty of surface corrosion, but no evidence of severe penetrating rust. The bumpers and a few other trim pieces require restoration or replacement, and the windshield appears to be cracked.

Lifting the Impala’s hood reveals a small-block V8, but its capacity is unknown. It could be a 283, although the 327 was also available in 1967. The car also features an automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to determine that the car doesn’t run or drive. With no air cleaner or valve covers, at least some of the leaf litter and other debris will have found its way inside the V8. Therefore, rebuilding or replacing the motor will be the only alternative. Of course, the buyer might choose to bolt something more potent under the hood, since the 396ci big-block was a factory option during that model year.

Trimmed in Blue with a bench seat, air conditioning, and a pushbutton radio, this Impala’s interior is almost as sad as its exterior. I suspect that the previous cosmetic refresh included at least a partial retrim, because the existing seat upholstery is failing, revealing the original seatcovers beneath. Their condition is unclear, but the existing covers may have protected the originals from wear and deterioration. However, with the carpet, door trims, and dashpad all beyond their best, the buyer will probably decide to perform a complete retrim. The good news is that it isn’t missing any critical components or hardware.

When it comes to tribute cars, we have seen plenty of examples of the General Lee and Doc Brown’s Back to the Future DeLorean. However, this Impala is only the third where the seller has suggested a Baby tribute. It seems to have struck a chord, as the listing statistics are extremely impressive. Maybe people are seeking something different, or they may view this classic as perfect for a faithful restoration. Which path would you follow if this Impala found its way into your workshop?

Supernatural, eh? At this ask, with that much work to do, the buyer might as well be from another planet.

The windshield isn’t the only thing that’s cracked.

Unless a specific car has a proven history it was used extensively on a show and can generate appearance money I don’t see the point. Clones of cars used in TV shows and movies generally comes across as a bit needy.
