Time Capsule? 1975 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Though the peak of the U.S. muscle car era had come and gone by then, the 1975 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am had its best sales year up to that point. And it was still two years before Smokey and the Bandit would hit movie theaters and help send demand for the car through the roof. This ’75 Trans Am looks like a museum piece and only has 47,000 miles. Located in Marietta, Georgia, very little history is offered about the automobile, so we have to assume it’s been babied for the past 48 years. There is no reserve in play, so the highest bidder here on eBay will get to take this treasure home. So far, $17,600 is the top ante.

The second-generation Firebirds received a wraparound rear window for 1975, which would make them noticeably different from the previous year’s models. And the 455 cubic inch V8 engine was all but gone, representing just three represent of Trans Am sales that year. Instead, a 400 V8 was the buyer’s only choice which could be had with either a 4-speed manual or TH-350 automatic transmission (the TH-400 was dropped as there wasn’t enough room in the chassis for it and the new catalytic converters). Of the 27,274 Trans Ams to see the light of day in 1975, just 6,997 were manually shifted.

This Trans Am sports Buccaneer Red paint and there’s no reason to believe it’s not the original finish. The same can also be said for the black vinyl interior. It surprises me that the number of photos offered isn’t all that many and details like a VIN are not included in the listing. Instead, the seller uses language like “automotive nostalgia” and “stunning classic” to help sell the car. Confirmed is the 400 V8 and 4-speed manual (Hurst shifter), along with the Shaker hood and 15-inch Honeycomb wheels. The indicated mileage is just 47k, so perhaps the Pontiac has only been used sparingly in recent years.

The Trans Am here is not 100% stock. It comes with an “aftermarket head unit” and Flowmaster exhaust. And it is also sold with historical documentation, but exactly what does that mean? A PHS report, build sheet, bill of sale on Day 1, or exactly what? This sounds like a dealer car that’s a “timeless gem ready to captivate”, though the seller does say this is a private sale. Regardless, it might be hard to find a nicer 1970s Trans Am built before Bandit Mania arrived.

I’m pretty sure you are right. Additionally its a vw based kit car with title issues. Not really – just trying to discourage other bidders.

The fastest I ever went in a car was in a blue one like this with the 4 speed, and a built 400.

Wrong. 75 was the last year you could get a 455SD as an option. I had a 75 TA. With a 455 4speed. It was detuned down too 200 HP. . But with a set of headers and a factory spec 400 Ram Air cam it came alive.

Not all ‘73-‘74 455 TransAms were SD’s, and the ‘75s were most definitely not.

The jewelry manager at the big chain department store had a white 455SD Trans Am ’75(?) I believe. He brought-in the documentation to show us for his having the engine balanced, blueprinted and relevant pieces magnafluxed. This was all a very big deal to we 17 & 18 year-olds. The fellow, maybe age 30 or so, treated his Trans Am well. Never abused it when we’d see him leave for the day although it did sound so good.

You are wrong sir,1974 was the last year of the SD455 and for 75′ and 76′ the regular 455 was available with 4spd only.Buick,Olds and Pontiac all discontinued the 455 after 1976.

    Beautiful, just stunning.

Dumb ad. Here in Marietta close by but really needs history. Heater core looped off and no AC.

But this looks incredible, and inside looks unused.

Makes you wonder how modified the engine is and if original.

    Stunner.

There were NO plural catalytic converters on 1975 F-bodies. The all had the large horsepower filter style cat. Please edit your story. Thank you.

Is says private sale, but the vehicle presentation and caption wording suggests otherwise to us.

Beautiful. Love the Pontiacs. The General only offered 1 gear ⚙️ ratio from the factory 3.08. They picked a sensible one.

the “Engine Turned” Dash was so cool in 1976. Remember
seeing one of these in the Enlisted Barracks parking lot and thinking it must be some kind of stock race car.

I had a ’75 w/ 455/4sp back in ’78. Yellow w/ black accents. Even put a ’75 Formula hood on w/ the center shaker cutout & shaker in black. I was 18 then, took the heads off, shopped, took fact exhaust off, added Hooker headers to duals straightout forward of rear tires, so rid the cat, raised comp w/TRW 10.5:1 pistons, added a Edelbrock Torquer, Holley 780 dbl pmp, and lastly, rid that hideous 85MPH speedo & put on a 160mph from the bone yard like this guy did, so makes ya wonder about the mileage! Much faster than my ’70 Vette conv LT-1 M22 I bought after this. I’d take that T/A back in a heartbeat if possible!

Make sure the HEI module is not white in color(original) – there was a recall, i believe. New ones from china are a crapshoot, tho.
