Top Down Cruiser: 1972 Buick Skylark Custom

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The era of General Motors’ mid-size cars from 1968 to 1972 was quite popular. And Buick’s entry in that group, the Skylark, may have been the most attractive of them (IMO). This 1972 Skylark Custom convertible looks stunning and is said to be a one-owner car with just one quality repaint. Located in Fountain Hills, Arizona, this attention-getter is available here on craigslist for $27,000 and is a turn-key automobile. Another fine tip brought our way by T.J.!

There were only two ways to order a mid-size Buick convertible in 1972: as a Skylark Custom (3,608 produced) or a Gran Sport (just 852 built). So, the seller’s Custom was a scant portion of overall Buick sales that year and came with a 350 cubic V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor (4-barrel was reserved for the GS). An automatic transmission was a foregone conclusion (who would order a “3-on-the-tree” in one of these cars?).

We’re told a single family has owned this Skylark since it was new. At 50,000 original miles, that’s barely more than 1,000 clicks a year in the past 43 years. The vehicle looks practically new and the only thing notable besides the repaint is the switch to aftermarket wheels. If you don’t favor those, the seller says he/she has retained the original steel wheels and “hub caps.”

If there is anything here to fault, I don’t know what it is. The finishing is beautiful, the top looks brand new, and the interior is quite accommodating (buckets rather than a bench seat would have been nice). Considering that no more than a few hundred of these Buick drop-tops are likely to still  exist, you might have to search long and hard to find another one that is turn-key.

Especially in Phoenix, AZ. I had a 72 Skylark Coupe, the A/C was so cold, frost would form on the rear window. This one is beautiful.

1969 skylark convertible in my garage. Family owned since 1970? At least that’s what my title says. Still in my parents name. I’m 42 and both of them have passed. Sad and miss my parents daily. I grew up going everywhere in ours. Damn happy to have the bucket seats, horseshoe shifter and factory8 track with the BUICK buttons. Don’t plan to do anything but restore it.

Wow… Beautiful looking Buick! Too bad they didn’t order factory AC! But you can bring it to a Heating and AC for cars and they can install the complete AC unit. It will look nice and tidy and COLD 🥶 . I do like the rims 2 day look. I would keep them on. When the seller is asking $27,000 six pictures don’t cut it. Minimum of pictures should be 20 or more. I drove one back in the late 70s. The 350-2 is quick off the line. With dual exhaust it’s better. I had friends who switch the intake and put on a Rochester 4bbl. Boy it really woke up.😄 Good luck to the next owner..ENJOY!! 🐻 🇺🇸

Not much to gripe about here. Yeah, yeah, I know bamboo and saddle won’t move the needle with many buyers but it appears too clean to not give it consideration if you want an A-body Buick that has not been heavily molested. Looks identical to a ’72 that used to be down the road from my parents home back when I was in high school. Not nearly as clean though. This one looks like a well cared for Skylark.

Beautiful car, but “the skylark, may have been the most attractive of them” is a interesting opinion. 68 and 69 Sylarks beauty is debatable, and Buick sure copied the clean look of the other A bodies in later years
I believe the 350/4bbl was optional for the custom or standard Skylark

Yes to the 350/4 option. While the ’68/9s are an acquired taste, there’s nothing on the road like ’em.

      Disclaimer: I own a ’69

That top is in nice shape, but it doesn’t look new. In fact it’s probably the original one, based on the dark gold or tan vinyl.

The Mag wheels definitely add some appeal to an unimpressive color combo, nice condition otherwise, these cars are out there, price is pushing it, should be as clean underneath and no stories for that kind of dinero.

What a sweet ride. Appears to be clean, straight and well cared for. Then comes the complaining about colors and lack of air conditioning. Beige and saddle are ideal. At least it’s not all yellowed like white and scorching hot like black interior. Probably was someone’s pleasure vehicle so air wasn’t a requirement. All I mean to say is that this is why you get to see this car today. I for one would find it perfect just like it is.

Being used to having a/c since my first car it’s something I always like to have. Easy enough to add on through the two dash vents and underneath.
I like the color combo in & out and the factory AM-FM & while not normally a fan of aftermarket rims, in this case these showcase the car very well. GLWTS!

I agree that this car shows very well. Myself I’ve gotten accustomed to air on my new vehicles but the ventilation was so much better on cars built before the 80s. I’m also blessed to live in Michigan where the unbearable heat and humidity is usually short lived. It’s not until both are in the 90s that you need shelter. Trouble is we have five or six months of slop like today. All in all it’s not a bad trade.

Very clean one owner Buick. I would put on Buick ralley wheels even though the period correct ones on it are nice!

At first, I thought that the price was out of line, but after taking a closer look at the car, I believe it is probably justified. One quick observation. I live near Phoenix, and if this car was going to stay around here, (or anywhere hot) AC would be mandatory. Beautiful car.

Personal choice, of course, but 27K would but a damn nice ’72 Corvette Convertible.
